Well water, treated for what's actually in it.

Every well is different. We read your lab report, specify the treatment your water needs and nothing it doesn't, and our own plumbers fit and service it.

  • Iron staining, black specks, rotten-egg smell, limescale, bacteria and acidic water all dealt with
  • No system priced until we have read your lab results, so nothing is guessed
  • One team specifies it, fits it, services it and answers the phone

What turns up in Irish wells

The ground decides the water. Limestone country runs hard, granite and peat run acidic, bog ground stains everything orange and farmland carries nitrates. Two wells on the same road can need different treatment, which is why the lab report comes first.

Iron

Orange-brown marks on laundry, sinks and toilets, and a metallic taste. The most common complaint we see from wells.

Staining

Manganese

Black specks and dark stains, often alongside iron. The drinking water limit is 50 micrograms per litre.

Staining and health

Bacteria

E. coli and coliforms from livestock, a septic tank or surface water getting into the well. You can't see, smell or taste them.

Health, treat first

Hardness

Limescale in the kettle, the shower, the cylinder and the boiler. Normal across the limestone counties.

Scaling

Nitrates

From fertiliser and slurry run-off. A particular concern for infants. The drinking water limit is 50 milligrams per litre.

Health

Acidic water (low pH)

Blue-green stains on sinks and pinhole leaks in copper pipe, because the water is slowly dissolving the plumbing.

Corrosion

Rotten-egg smell

Hydrogen sulphide gas in the water, usually worst from the hot tap.

Smell

Sediment

Sand, silt and rust flakes that wear out pumps, valves and every filter after them if they aren't caught first.

Wear and blockage

If your report shows bacteria, don't drink the water untreated in the meantime. Boil it or use bottled water until a disinfection system is fitted and a repeat lab test comes back clear.

Test first, then design, then fit

We don't put a price on a well system before we see the numbers. Anyone who does is guessing, and a wrong guess on a well usually costs more than the system.

Get the water tested

An independent, INAB-accredited laboratory analyses a sample from your well. We don't test water ourselves, but we can point you to a lab and tell you which tests are worth ordering: usually iron, manganese, hardness, pH, nitrate and bacteria.

Send us the report

Email it with your Eircode, the size of the house and anything you have noticed. We read the results and work out what your water needs, in what order, and what size.

No charge and no obligation

Quote, fit and commission

You get an itemised quote that explains why each part is there. Our own plumbers fit it, set it up and show you how to look after it. Most whole-house systems are fitted in a day.

Then a service visit once a year

We install nationwide, except Donegal, Kerry, Leitrim and Sligo.

What fixes what, and the order it goes in

A well system is rarely one box. It's a line of them, and the order matters as much as the parts: put them in the wrong order and the iron fouls the softener or cloudy water blinds the UV lamp. You only get the stages your report calls for.

What we fitWhat it deals with
1Sediment filterCartridge or backwashing filter at the start of the line.Sand, silt and rust, so nothing after it clogs.
2pH correctionA vessel of neutralising mineral that raises the pH of acidic water.Blue-green staining and corrosion of copper pipe and brass fittings.
3Iron and manganese filterOxidises the dissolved metals and traps them in a catalytic filter bed, which backwashes itself clean.Orange and black staining, metallic taste and the rotten-egg smell.
4Water softenerResin that swaps the calcium and magnesium for sodium, regenerated with salt.Limescale throughout the house.
5UV disinfectionAn ultraviolet lamp on the main line, fitted last so the water reaching it is clear.E. coli, coliforms and other bacteria, with no chemicals added.
6Reverse osmosis at the kitchen tapAn under-sink drinking water system with its own tap.Nitrates and whatever dissolved solids are left, for the water you drink and cook with.

On mains water and only after better drinking water or less limescale? You don't need any of this. See drinking water filters or water softeners.

The difference in the water quality is amazing — softer water throughout the house and great-tasting drinking water straight from the tap. I'm very happy with both the products and the workmanship. Highly recommend EcoFilter Ireland to anyone thinking about improving their water quality!

Questions we get asked

Anything else, ring 01 554 6266 or email info@ecofilter.ie. You'll get a plumber, not a call centre.

Why won't you quote me a system up front?
Because we would be guessing. Two wells on the same road can have very different water. Until we see your iron, manganese, hardness, pH and bacteria figures, any price is a guess, and a system built on a guess either doesn't work or costs more than it should. A short wait for a lab test saves years of trouble.
Do you test the water yourselves?
No. The analysis is done by an independent, INAB-accredited laboratory, so the results are impartial. We can tell you where to get it done and which tests to order, and then we specify the system from the report.
I already have a lab report. Is it still good?
Usually, yes. Send it on and we'll tell you. If it's a few years old, or something about the water has changed since, we may suggest repeating the tests that matter before you spend money on equipment.
Is there a grant for well water treatment?
There is a local authority grant for improvement works to private wells, and it can cover treatment. The amounts and conditions are set nationally and change from time to time, so check the current terms with your county council before work starts. We'll give you the itemised quote you need for the application.
How long does the installation take?
Most whole-house systems are fitted in a day. A longer line with pH correction and a drinking water system at the kitchen sink can run into a second morning.
What looking-after does it need?
Salt for the softener, a new UV lamp once a year, a change of pre-filter cartridge now and then, and a service visit once a year. We'll go through all of it with you on the day.
How do I know the treated water is safe?
Once the system has been running for a short while, send another sample to the lab. A clear repeat report is the proof, and it is worth doing again every year or two, because well water changes.
Where do you install?
We install nationwide, except Donegal, Kerry, Leitrim and Sligo.
