Why Portlaoise water is so hard

Portlaoise is different from the Boyne towns in one respect: most of its public supply is pumped from the ground rather than taken from a river. That makes the hardness worse, not better. Groundwater in Laois has spent years working through limestone, dissolving calcium and magnesium the whole way, so it comes out of the borehole already hard. Uisce Éireann's figure for the Portlaoise supply zone is around 300 mg/L of calcium carbonate, right on the line between hard and very hard.

You see it on the shower screen, on the taps, in the bottom of the kettle, and on the bill when the immersion goes.

What hard water does in a Portlaoise home

  • Hot cylinders and immersions. Scale on the element means a longer heat-up, higher bills and an early failure. We change plenty of immersions around the town.
  • Electric showers and mixer valves. Scale blocks the heater can and the spray plate; the pressure drops and the shower cuts in and out.
  • Combi boilers. The plate heat exchanger furs up and the hot water flow drops away over a couple of winters.
  • Washing machines, dishwashers and kettles all scale up and get replaced years before they should.

A whole-house softener on the incoming mains stops every bit of that. Everything downstream gets soft water.

Which AquaSilk suits a Portlaoise house

Most of the homes we fit in Portlaoise are three and four bed houses in the estates off the Mountmellick, Stradbally and Abbeyleix roads, with four or five people and two bathrooms. On 300 mg/L water the AquaSilk Midi is the usual pick. Smaller households and apartments in the town are well covered by the Mini, which fits under a kitchen sink. Bigger houses with three or more bathrooms, common out towards Emo and Ballyroan, want the Maxi. The size picker below will mark the right one.

Private wells around Portlaoise

Once you leave the town, a huge share of Laois homes are on their own borehole. The same limestone that hardens the public supply hardens well water too, and private wells can also carry iron, manganese or bacteria that a softener on its own will not fix. We send a sample to an accredited lab and specify the right system from the results, which may be a softener alone or a softener with a filter ahead of it. Our well water treatment page covers it.

Water softener and drinking tap done yesterday by an absolute gentlemen named Iggy, he was efficient, tidy, clean and punctual, called me before hand to let me know roughly time arrives, did the job really professional, we would highly recommend the company and Iggy.

The difference in the water quality is amazing — softer water throughout the house and great-tasting drinking water straight from the tap. I'm very happy with both the products and the workmanship. Highly recommend EcoFilter Ireland to anyone thinking about improving their water quality!

We went for the complete setup: a whole house water softener, the Aplos Angel Direct Flow reverse osmosis drinking water system, and a spray hose triflow tap—and the difference has been amazing. Our entire home is now limescale free, which has made such a noticeable impact.

Questions from Portlaoise customers

Anything else, ring 01 554 6266 or email info@ecofilter.ie. You'll get a plumber, not a call centre.

Do you actually come out to Portlaoise?
Yes. Our own plumbers fit softeners in Portlaoise and across Mountmellick, Abbeyleix, Stradbally, Mountrath, Portarlington, Emo, Ballyroan. The fitted price on this page is the full price for a Portlaoise install: the trip, the plumbing, the drain connection, commissioning and the first fill of salt. No mileage added on afterwards.
How hard is the water in Portlaoise, really?
Around 300 mg/L of calcium carbonate (Uisce Éireann supply zone), which is very hard. Anything over 200 mg/L is hard enough to coat an immersion element and block a shower head within a couple of years; over 300 it happens faster. Type your own Eircode into the checker at the top of the page for your street's reading.
Where does it go, and what does it need?
As close as possible to where the mains enters the house: under the kitchen sink, in a utility room, a garage or a hall press. It needs a standard socket, a drain for the rinse water (we run it to the nearest waste or gully), and room roughly the size of a kitchen bin for the Mini, a bit more for the Midi and Maxi.
Can I drink softened water?
Softening swaps hardness for a small amount of sodium. On very hard water that sodium adds up, so standard practice, and what we do on every job, is to leave the kitchen cold tap on unsoftened mains for drinking and cooking. If you also want better-tasting drinking water, an under-sink filter on that tap covers it and we can fit both on the same visit.
I'm on a private well near Portlaoise. Is a softener still the answer?
Often, but not always. Well water in this part of the country is usually hard, but it can also carry iron, manganese or bacteria that a softener alone won't deal with. We send your sample to an accredited lab and specify the system off the results, which might be a softener on its own or a softener with a filter in front of it. See our well water treatment page.
How much salt does it use and where do I get it?
Tablet salt in 25 kg bags, from most hardware shops and from us. A family of four on hard water gets through a bag roughly every four to eight weeks; a couple in an apartment, less. The unit only regenerates when it needs to, so light use means less salt.
How long does the install take?
Two to three hours for a straightforward fit. We ask for a photo of the stop valve and the space beforehand, so surprises on the day are rare. We connect it, set it for your hardness, add the first salt and show you how to top it up.
What about the warranty and servicing?
Every AquaSilk comes with a 10-year parts warranty, kept valid by an annual service. We do the service ourselves: a short visit to check the valve, the regeneration settings and the salt, and clear any build-up. We text you when it's due.
Can I pay in instalments?
Humm interest-free finance available at checkout. Cards and bank transfer are fine too.
