Why Drogheda water is so hard

Drogheda's public supply is drawn from the River Boyne and treated at Staleen, a few miles upstream of the town. The Boyne spends its whole life running over limestone, so the water arrives already loaded with calcium and magnesium. Uisce Éireann's figure for the Drogheda supply zone is around 310 mg/L of calcium carbonate, which puts the town firmly in the very hard band alongside Navan and Dundalk.

If you have moved to Drogheda from south Dublin or from anywhere on the Vartry supply, the difference is obvious within a week: cloudy glasses, a kettle that needs descaling, and a white crust on every tap.

What hard water does in a Drogheda home

  • Immersions and hot cylinders. Scale builds on the element and the coil, the tank takes longer to heat and the element eventually fails. We change a lot of immersions in Drogheda.
  • Electric showers. The heater can scales up, flow drops and the unit starts tripping or running cold. Showers in Drogheda rarely see their full design life.
  • Combi boilers. The plate heat exchanger clogs, hot water flow drops to a dribble and the boiler works harder every winter.
  • Dishwashers, washing machines and kettles all go the same way, and the laundry comes out stiff.

Fitting a softener where the mains enters the house means every tap, shower and appliance downstream gets soft water from that day on.

Which AquaSilk suits a Drogheda house

The bulk of our Drogheda installs are family homes in estates off the Dublin Road, Rathmullen, Ballsgrove and the newer developments on the north side, typically four or five people and two bathrooms. On 310 mg/L water that is AquaSilk Midi territory. Apartments and smaller houses in the town centre are well served by the Mini, which fits under a kitchen sink. Larger houses out towards Termonfeckin, Baltray and Bettystown with three or more bathrooms are a Maxi job. Use the size picker below and it will mark the right one for your household.

Private wells in the Drogheda area

Plenty of houses between Drogheda, Slane, Collon and Dunleer are on their own well. Louth and east Meath well water is usually hard, but it can also carry iron, manganese or bacteria that a softener alone will not deal with. We send a sample to an accredited lab and specify the system off the results. See our well water treatment page for how that works.

Getting it fitted in Drogheda

Drogheda is forty minutes up the M1 from our base, so it is a regular run for our plumbers and we cover Bettystown, Laytown, Termonfeckin, Duleek, Ardee and Dundalk from the same trip. Order it fitted online or ring us, send a photo of the stop valve and the space beside it, and we book a slot. Two to three hours later you have soft water, salt in the tank and a plumber who has shown you how it works. The fitted price shown is the full price for Drogheda. Prefer a quote first? The quote form takes two minutes, and our main water softener page has the full range.

Water softener and drinking tap done yesterday by an absolute gentlemen named Iggy, he was efficient, tidy, clean and punctual, called me before hand to let me know roughly time arrives, did the job really professional, we would highly recommend the company and Iggy.

The difference in the water quality is amazing — softer water throughout the house and great-tasting drinking water straight from the tap. I'm very happy with both the products and the workmanship. Highly recommend EcoFilter Ireland to anyone thinking about improving their water quality!

We went for the complete setup: a whole house water softener, the Aplos Angel Direct Flow reverse osmosis drinking water system, and a spray hose triflow tap—and the difference has been amazing. Our entire home is now limescale free, which has made such a noticeable impact.

Questions from Drogheda customers

Anything else, ring 01 554 6266 or email info@ecofilter.ie. You'll get a plumber, not a call centre.

Do you actually come out to Drogheda?
Yes. Our own plumbers fit softeners in Drogheda and across Bettystown, Laytown, Termonfeckin, Duleek, Slane, Collon, Dunleer, Ardee, Dundalk. The fitted price on this page is the full price for a Drogheda install: the trip, the plumbing, the drain connection, commissioning and the first fill of salt. No mileage added on afterwards.
How hard is the water in Drogheda, really?
Around 310 mg/L of calcium carbonate (Uisce Éireann supply zone), which is very hard. Anything over 200 mg/L is hard enough to coat an immersion element and block a shower head within a couple of years; over 300 it happens faster. Type your own Eircode into the checker at the top of the page for your street's reading.
Where does it go, and what does it need?
As close as possible to where the mains enters the house: under the kitchen sink, in a utility room, a garage or a hall press. It needs a standard socket, a drain for the rinse water (we run it to the nearest waste or gully), and room roughly the size of a kitchen bin for the Mini, a bit more for the Midi and Maxi.
Can I drink softened water?
Softening swaps hardness for a small amount of sodium. On very hard water that sodium adds up, so standard practice, and what we do on every job, is to leave the kitchen cold tap on unsoftened mains for drinking and cooking. If you also want better-tasting drinking water, an under-sink filter on that tap covers it and we can fit both on the same visit.
I'm on a private well near Drogheda. Is a softener still the answer?
Often, but not always. Well water in this part of the country is usually hard, but it can also carry iron, manganese or bacteria that a softener alone won't deal with. We send your sample to an accredited lab and specify the system off the results, which might be a softener on its own or a softener with a filter in front of it. See our well water treatment page.
How much salt does it use and where do I get it?
Tablet salt in 25 kg bags, from most hardware shops and from us. A family of four on hard water gets through a bag roughly every four to eight weeks; a couple in an apartment, less. The unit only regenerates when it needs to, so light use means less salt.
How long does the install take?
Two to three hours for a straightforward fit. We ask for a photo of the stop valve and the space beforehand, so surprises on the day are rare. We connect it, set it for your hardness, add the first salt and show you how to top it up.
What about the warranty and servicing?
Every AquaSilk comes with a 10-year parts warranty, kept valid by an annual service. We do the service ourselves: a short visit to check the valve, the regeneration settings and the salt, and clear any build-up. We text you when it's due.
Can I pay in instalments?
Humm interest-free finance available at checkout. Cards and bank transfer are fine too.
