  • Three sizes, from a one-bed apartment to a five-bathroom house
  • Fitted in two to three hours by the team that services it afterwards

From €549 supply only, or €899 fitted. 10-year parts warranty with annual service.

How hard is your water?

Type your Eircode and your area's hardness reading appears right here, with a straight answer on whether a softener is worth it for you.

Readings are from Uisce Éireann supply-zone data. Just the first three characters will do, and we don't store your Eircode.

Most of Leinster is in the red.

Hardness is measured in milligrams of calcium carbonate per litre. Under 100 is soft. Over 200 and scale is doing real damage; over 300 it's doing it fast. Here is how the main supply zones compare.

  • Very hard 300 mg/L and over
  • Hard 200 to 300
  • Moderate 100 to 200
  • Soft under 100

What hard water is doing in your house

Every litre that goes through a hot cylinder, shower or kettle leaves a little calcium carbonate behind. On a Meath or Kildare supply that adds up to kilos of scale a year, and it lands in the places that cost most to fix.

Cylinders, immersions and combi boilers

Scale forms fastest where water is heated. A coating on an immersion element or heat exchanger insulates it, so it runs longer to heat the same tank, and eventually it fails. It is the most common reason we replace immersions in hard-water areas.

Showers, taps and appliances

Electric showers, washing machine and dishwasher elements, kettles and coffee machines all scale up the same way. Thermostatic shower valves stick, spray heads block, and things get replaced years before they should.

Cleaning, soap and skin

Hardness minerals react with soap to make scum instead of lather, so you use more of everything and still get chalky glass, dull tiles and stiff towels. Softened water rinses clean, which is why many customers notice their skin first.

What it's likely costing you

An honest estimate, not a promise. Pick your household and see where the money goes. If you've checked your Eircode above, the figures are scaled to your hardness.

Assumes hard water (300 mg/L) until you check your Eircode. Based on typical Irish energy prices and appliance costs; your own figures will differ.

Resin tank Salt tank Hard water in From the mains stop valve Soft water out To every hot and cold tap Tablet salt, topped up every few weeks

Ion exchange. The same chemistry since the 1930s, done automatically.

    1. Hard water goes in

Mains water, carrying dissolved calcium and magnesium, flows into a tank of resin beads.

    2. The resin swaps the minerals

The beads hold sodium. As water passes through they grab the calcium and magnesium and release sodium in their place. That's the whole trick.

    3. Soft water goes out

What leaves the tank carries nothing that can form scale, so every tap, shower and appliance downstream gets soft water.

    4. It cleans itself with salt

When the resin fills up with hardness, the unit flushes it with brine from the salt tank and the beads are ready again. It does this on its own, usually at night. Your only job is a bag of salt every few weeks.

    Three sizes. Pick by household.

The resin volume decides how much water the unit can soften between regenerations. Bigger house, more people or very hard water means a bigger tank. Tell us the household and we'll mark the right one.

    Softener or scale conditioner?

We sell both, so here is the difference without the sales pitch.

    Water softener

    AquaSilk Mini, Midi and Maxi

    • Actually removes the hardness minerals. The water leaving it is soft.
    • No scale forms anywhere downstream, in the cylinder, the shower or the kettle.
    • Soft-water feel: lather, clean rinse, less soap and detergent.
    • Needs a socket, a drain for rinse water, and salt top-ups.
    • Adds a little sodium, so we keep the kitchen cold tap unsoftened for drinking.

The right choice on hard and very hard water, which is most of Leinster.

    Scale conditioner

    ScaleDP and ScaleArmor cartridge systems

    • No salt, no drain, no electricity. Fits in a small space.
    • Keeps the minerals in the water, so drinking water is unchanged.
    • Cheaper to buy and to run.
    • The water is still hard. It changes how scale forms so less of it sticks; it doesn't stop it.
    • No soft-water feel and no saving on soap.

Worth it on moderate water, in an apartment, or anywhere a softener can't be plumbed to a drain.

Magnetic clamps and electronic descalers are a different thing again: the evidence for them is thin and we don't fit them. If you're not sure which way to go, send us your Eircode and a photo of where the mains comes in and we'll tell you straight. The conditioners are the ScaleArmor and the ScaleDP.

We went for the complete setup: a whole house water softener, the Aplos Angel Direct Flow reverse osmosis drinking water system, and a spray hose triflow tap—and the difference has been amazing. Our entire home is now limescale free, which has made such a noticeable impact.

The difference in the water quality is amazing — softer water throughout the house and great-tasting drinking water straight from the tap. I'm very happy with both the products and the workmanship. Highly recommend EcoFilter Ireland to anyone thinking about improving their water quality!

Callum was very professional and the installation was seamless. The workmanship was top notch and the place was tidied up completely. Recommend them 100%. Very happy to have had them install the water filter and softener :)

    Questions we get asked

    Anything else, ring 01 554 6266 or email info@ecofilter.ie. You'll get a plumber, not a call centre.

Where does it go, and what does it need?
As close as possible to where the mains enters the house: under the kitchen sink, in a utility room, a garage or a hall press. It needs a standard socket, a drain for the rinse water (we run it to the nearest waste or gully), and room roughly the size of a kitchen bin for the Mini, a bit more for the Midi and Maxi.
    Can I drink softened water?
Softening swaps hardness for a small amount of sodium. On very hard Irish water that sodium adds up, so standard practice, and what we do on every job, is to leave the kitchen cold tap on unsoftened mains for drinking and cooking. If you also want better-tasting drinking water, an under-sink filter on that tap covers it.
How much salt does it use and where do I get it?
Tablet salt in 25 kg bags, from most hardware shops and from us. A family of four on hard water gets through a bag roughly every four to eight weeks; a couple in an apartment, less. The unit only regenerates when it needs to, so light use means less salt.
Will it affect my water pressure?
A correctly sized unit passes full domestic flow without a noticeable drop, which is why we size up for large multi-bathroom houses. It won't raise your pressure either; if you have a low-pressure problem, that's a separate job and we can look at it while we're there.
Do you fit it, or do I need my own plumber?
We fit across Leinster and most of Ireland with our own plumbers. Choose "Professional installation" at checkout. If you'd rather use your own plumber, order supply-only and it ships free with the fitting instructions.
What about the warranty and servicing?
Every AquaSilk comes with a 10-year parts warranty, kept valid by an annual service. We do the service ourselves: a short visit to check the valve, the regeneration settings and the salt, and clear any build-up. We text you when it's due.
How long does the install take?
Two to three hours for a straightforward fit. We ask for a photo of the stop valve and the space beforehand, so surprises on the day are rare. We connect it, set it for your hardness, add the first salt and show you how to top it up.
Should I get a softener or a conditioner?
On hard or very hard water (200 mg/L and over), a softener. It's the only thing that gives you genuinely soft water and stops scale completely. On moderate water, in an apartment, or where there is no drain nearby, a conditioner cartridge is the practical option. Check your Eircode at the top of the page and it'll tell you which band you're in.
    Can I pay in instalments?
Humm interest-free finance available at checkout. Cards and bank transfer are fine too.

Not sure which size? Ask a plumber.

Send us your Eircode and a photo of where the mains comes into the house. We'll come back with the right size, what it'll cost fitted, and whether a softener is even the right answer for your water.
