EPSAquaSilk water softeners, fitted by CPS Plumbing & Electrical

Water softeners in Co. Cavan. Supplied and fitted.

A CPS plumber fitting an AquaSilk water softener under a kitchen sink

The honest answer for Cavan: most mains water in the county is soft, and if you're on it you probably don't need a softener. Where we do fit them is on hard private wells and group schemes. Put in your Eircode or send us a lab result and we'll tell you straight.

  • Cavan town's mains water is soft lake water, around 50 mg/L, and does not need a softener. Kingscourt is moderately hard at about 150. Private wells vary, so test before you buy.
  • Three sizes, from an apartment to a five-bathroom house
  • Fitted in two to three hours by our own plumbers, not a subcontractor

From €549 supply only, or €899 fitted in Co. Cavan.

10-year parts warranty with annual service.

Is Cavan water hard?

Mostly, no. Cavan town's public supply is drawn from Lough Acanon and treated at the Cavan regional plant, and most of the county's public water comes from lakes sitting on old shale and greywacke rock with very little limestone in it. That water picks up very little calcium, so it's soft, around 50 mg/L of calcium carbonate. On water like that a softener won't earn its keep, and we won't sell you one.

Kingscourt is the exception on the public side. It's supplied from a borehole in the sandstone north of the town, and Geological Survey figures for that borehole average about 146 mg/L: moderately hard rather than hard. Scale builds slowly there, so whether a softener is worth it comes down to how much it bothers you.

Where a softener does make sense in Cavan

  • Private wells on limestone. The rock under north-west Cavan, out towards Ballyconnell, Swanlinbar and Blacklion, includes limestone, and wells drilled into it can be properly hard.
  • Wells near the gypsum. Around Kingscourt and over the border towards Carrickmacross, wells near the gypsum beds can carry calcium sulphate as well as hardness.
  • Group schemes on groundwater. Some group schemes pump from boreholes rather than lakes. Ask your scheme, or put your Eircode in the checker.

For any well we send a sample to an accredited lab and specify the system off the results, which might be a softener, a filter for iron and manganese, or both. See our well water treatment page.

On soft mains water? Here's what's worth doing

On soft lake water the usual complaint is taste: chlorine, and sometimes an earthy taste in late summer. An under-sink drinking water system takes those out and gives you better water for the kettle and the glass. See our drinking water systems.

Getting it fitted in Cavan

Every install is done by our own plumbers, not a subcontractor, and Cavan is about an hour and a half up the N3 from our Dublin base. We cover Cavan town, Kingscourt, Bailieborough, Virginia, Cootehill, Ballyjamesduff, Belturbet and Ballyconnell. Send us your Eircode, a lab result if you have one, and a photo of where the mains comes in, and we'll tell you whether you need a softener, a filter or nothing at all. Use the quote form or ring us. Over the border in Monaghan the water is harder; see our Co. Monaghan page.

Water softener and drinking tap done yesterday by an absolute gentlemen named Iggy, he was efficient, tidy, clean and punctual, called me before hand to let me know roughly time arrives, did the job really professional, we would highly recommend the company and Iggy.

The difference in the water quality is amazing — softer water throughout the house and great-tasting drinking water straight from the tap. I'm very happy with both the products and the workmanship. Highly recommend EcoFilter Ireland to anyone thinking about improving their water quality!

We went for the complete setup: a whole house water softener, the Aplos Angel Direct Flow reverse osmosis drinking water system, and a spray hose triflow tap—and the difference has been amazing. Our entire home is now limescale free, which has made such a noticeable impact.

Questions from Co. Cavan customers

Anything else, ring 01 554 6266 or email info@ecofilter.ie. You'll get a plumber, not a call centre.

Do you actually come out to Co. Cavan?
Yes. Our own plumbers fit softeners in Co. Cavan and across Cavan town, Kingscourt, Bailieborough, Cootehill, Virginia, Ballyjamesduff, Belturbet, Ballyconnell, Shercock. The fitted price on this page is the full price for a Co. Cavan install: the trip, the plumbing, the drain connection, commissioning and the first fill of salt. No mileage added on afterwards.
How hard is the water in Co. Cavan, really?
Cavan town's mains water is soft lake water, around 50 mg/L, and does not need a softener. Kingscourt is moderately hard at about 150. Private wells vary, so test before you buy. Anything over 200 mg/L is hard enough to coat an immersion element and block a shower head within a couple of years; over 300 it happens faster. Type your own Eircode into the checker at the top of the page for your street's reading.
Where does it go, and what does it need?
As close as possible to where the mains enters the house: under the kitchen sink, in a utility room, a garage or a hall press. It needs a standard socket, a drain for the rinse water (we run it to the nearest waste or gully), and room roughly the size of a kitchen bin for the Mini, a bit more for the Midi and Maxi.
Can I drink softened water?
Softening swaps hardness for a small amount of sodium. On very hard water that sodium adds up, so standard practice, and what we do on every job, is to leave the kitchen cold tap on unsoftened mains for drinking and cooking. If you also want better-tasting drinking water, an under-sink filter on that tap covers it and we can fit both on the same visit.
I'm on a private well near Co. Cavan. Is a softener still the answer?
Often, but not always. Well water in this part of the country is usually hard, but it can also carry iron, manganese or bacteria that a softener alone won't deal with. We send your sample to an accredited lab and specify the system off the results, which might be a softener on its own or a softener with a filter in front of it. See our well water treatment page.
How much salt does it use and where do I get it?
Tablet salt in 25 kg bags, from most hardware shops and from us. A family of four on hard water gets through a bag roughly every four to eight weeks; a couple in an apartment, less. The unit only regenerates when it needs to, so light use means less salt.
How long does the install take?
Two to three hours for a straightforward fit. We ask for a photo of the stop valve and the space beforehand, so surprises on the day are rare. We connect it, set it for your hardness, add the first salt and show you how to top it up.
What about the warranty and servicing?
Every AquaSilk comes with a 10-year parts warranty, kept valid by an annual service. We do the service ourselves: a short visit to check the valve, the regeneration settings and the salt, and clear any build-up. We text you when it's due.
Can I pay in instalments?
Humm interest-free finance available at checkout. Cards and bank transfer are fine too.
