Why Navan water is so hard

Navan sits in the middle of the Boyne valley, and the Boyne drains limestone country. Rain picks up calcium and magnesium as it works through that rock, and by the time the river reaches the treatment plant at Liscarton it is carrying one of the heaviest mineral loads of any public supply in Leinster. Uisce Éireann's figure for the Navan and Trim supply zone is around 355 mg/L of calcium carbonate, well into the very hard band. Most of Dublin, by comparison, is between 75 and 200.

That is why a kettle in Johnstown or Blackcastle furs up in weeks, why the glass on a Navan shower screen never looks clean, and why we replace so many immersion elements and electric shower units around the town.

What hard water does in a Navan home

Every litre that gets heated leaves a little scale behind. In a house on 355 mg/L water that adds up fast:

  • Hot cylinders and immersions. Scale coats the element, so it runs longer to heat the same tank and eventually burns out. We see immersions in Navan failing years early.
  • Electric showers and mixer valves. The heater can and spray plate block up, the pressure drops and the shower starts cutting out hot and cold.
  • Combi boilers and heat exchangers. Scale on the plate heat exchanger throttles the hot water flow and shortens the life of the boiler.
  • Washing machines, dishwashers and kettles. All of them scale up and all of them get replaced early.

A whole-house softener fitted where the mains enters the house stops all of it at once. Nothing downstream ever sees hard water again.

Which AquaSilk suits a Navan house

Most of the homes we fit in Navan are three and four bed semi-detached houses in estates like Johnstown, Windtown and Beaufort, with four or five people and two bathrooms. On water this hard the AquaSilk Midi is the usual fit. Smaller households and apartments in the town centre are well covered by the Mini, which tucks under a kitchen sink. Larger houses out the Trim and Kells roads with three or more bathrooms go to the Maxi. The size picker below marks the right one for your household, and you can change it after you check your own Eircode.

Private wells around Navan

Outside the town, in places like Kentstown, Dunshaughlin, Slane and the back roads towards Kells and Athboy, a lot of houses are on their own borehole. Well water in Meath is nearly always hard, but it can also carry iron, manganese or bacteria that a softener on its own will not touch. For a well we send a sample to an accredited lab and specify the system off the results, which may be a softener alone or a softener with a filter in front of it. Our well water treatment page explains what is involved.

Getting it fitted in Navan

We are a Dublin company and Navan is under an hour up the M3, so it is a routine run for our plumbers. Order the softener fitted online or ring us, send a photo of your stop valve and the space beside it, and we book a morning or afternoon slot. The install takes two to three hours and we leave you with soft water, the first bag of salt in the tank and a clear explanation of how to top it up. The fitted price on this page is the full price for Navan. If you would rather start with a quote, the quote form takes two minutes. For the full range and the Ireland-wide hardness chart, see our main water softener page.

Three sizes. Pick by household.

Bigger house, more people or very hard water means a bigger tank. Tell us the household and we'll mark the right one for a Navan home.

Water softener and drinking tap done yesterday by an absolute gentlemen named Iggy, he was efficient, tidy, clean and punctual, called me before hand to let me know roughly time arrives, did the job really professional, we would highly recommend the company and Iggy.

The difference in the water quality is amazing — softer water throughout the house and great-tasting drinking water straight from the tap. I'm very happy with both the products and the workmanship. Highly recommend EcoFilter Ireland to anyone thinking about improving their water quality!

We went for the complete setup: a whole house water softener, the Aplos Angel Direct Flow reverse osmosis drinking water system, and a spray hose triflow tap—and the difference has been amazing. Our entire home is now limescale free, which has made such a noticeable impact.

Questions from Navan customers

Anything else, ring 01 554 6266 or email info@ecofilter.ie. You'll get a plumber, not a call centre.

Do you actually come out to Navan?
Yes. Our own plumbers fit softeners in Navan and across Johnstown, Kells, Trim, Athboy, Dunshaughlin, Slane, Kentstown, Nobber. The fitted price on this page is the full price for a Navan install: the trip, the plumbing, the drain connection, commissioning and the first fill of salt. No mileage added on afterwards.
How hard is the water in Navan, really?
Around 355 mg/L of calcium carbonate (Uisce Éireann supply zone), which is very hard. Anything over 200 mg/L is hard enough to coat an immersion element and block a shower head within a couple of years; over 300 it happens faster. Type your own Eircode into the checker at the top of the page for your street's reading.
Where does it go, and what does it need?
As close as possible to where the mains enters the house: under the kitchen sink, in a utility room, a garage or a hall press. It needs a standard socket, a drain for the rinse water (we run it to the nearest waste or gully), and room roughly the size of a kitchen bin for the Mini, a bit more for the Midi and Maxi.
Can I drink softened water?
Softening swaps hardness for a small amount of sodium. On very hard water that sodium adds up, so standard practice, and what we do on every job, is to leave the kitchen cold tap on unsoftened mains for drinking and cooking. If you also want better-tasting drinking water, an under-sink filter on that tap covers it and we can fit both on the same visit.
I'm on a private well near Navan. Is a softener still the answer?
Often, but not always. Well water in this part of the country is usually hard, but it can also carry iron, manganese or bacteria that a softener alone won't deal with. We send your sample to an accredited lab and specify the system off the results, which might be a softener on its own or a softener with a filter in front of it. See our well water treatment page.
How much salt does it use and where do I get it?
Tablet salt in 25 kg bags, from most hardware shops and from us. A family of four on hard water gets through a bag roughly every four to eight weeks; a couple in an apartment, less. The unit only regenerates when it needs to, so light use means less salt.
How long does the install take?
Two to three hours for a straightforward fit. We ask for a photo of the stop valve and the space beforehand, so surprises on the day are rare. We connect it, set it for your hardness, add the first salt and show you how to top it up.
What about the warranty and servicing?
Every AquaSilk comes with a 10-year parts warranty, kept valid by an annual service. We do the service ourselves: a short visit to check the valve, the regeneration settings and the salt, and clear any build-up. We text you when it's due.
Can I pay in instalments?
Humm interest-free finance available at checkout. Cards and bank transfer are fine too.
