EPSAquaSilk water softeners, fitted by CPS Plumbing & Electrical

Water softeners in Dublin. Supplied and fitted.

A CPS plumber fitting an AquaSilk water softener under a kitchen sink

Half of Dublin needs a softener and half doesn't. North and west of the city on Leixlip water it's hard; the south side is soft. Put in your Eircode and we'll tell you which you're on. CPS is a Dublin firm, so your install is done by our own plumbers from Inchicore.

  • North and west Dublin on Leixlip water is hard, around 200 mg/L, and north Fingal is very hard. South Dublin is soft at 75 and does not need a softener. Your Eircode tells you which.
  • Three sizes, from an apartment to a five-bathroom house
  • Fitted in two to three hours by our own plumbers, not a subcontractor

From €549 supply only, or €899 fitted in Dublin.

10-year parts warranty with annual service.

How hard is the water in Dublin?

Type your Eircode and your area's hardness reading appears right here, with a straight answer on whether a softener is worth it for you.

Readings are from Uisce Éireann supply-zone data. Just the first three characters will do, and we don't store your Eircode.

Dublin has four different waters. Which one are you on?

Nobody tells you this when you buy a house, but the hardness of your tap water in Dublin depends almost entirely on which treatment plant feeds your street, and the city is split between four. That is why a kettle in Finglas furs up in a month and a kettle in Rathmines never does.

  • North and west Dublin: Leixlip supply, hard, around 200 mg/L. Liffey water treated at Leixlip. Dublin 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 and 17, Swords, Malahide, Portmarnock, Howth, Lucan and most of north Co. Dublin. Hard enough to coat an immersion element and block a shower head over a couple of years.
  • South Dublin: Ballymore Eustace and Vartry supplies, soft, around 75 mg/L. Dublin 2, 4, 6, 6W, 8, 14, 16, 18 and 24, Blackrock, Dún Laoghaire, Dalkey, Rathfarnham, Tallaght, Bray. Soft water. A softener would not earn its money here; if taste or chlorine is the complaint, a drinking water filter is the right buy.
  • Dublin 10, 12, 20 and 22: a blend, moderate, around 155 mg/L. Ballyfermot, Crumlin, Walkinstown, Palmerstown and Clondalkin get a mix. Scale builds slowly; a softener is worth it if you are seeing it, a conditioner cartridge if you are not sure.
  • North Fingal: Bog of the Ring groundwater, very hard, around 336 mg/L. Balbriggan, Skerries, Rush and Lusk are on limestone groundwater, the hardest water in Co. Dublin. See our Balbriggan page.

Type your Eircode into the checker at the top of the page and it tells you which one you are on and whether a softener is worth it. We would rather tell a Dublin 6 customer not to buy one than fit something that does nothing.

What hard water does in a north Dublin home

  • Immersions and hot cylinders. Scale builds on the element and the coil, slower to heat and quicker to fail. We change a lot of immersions on the northside.
  • Electric showers. The heater can scales up, the flow drops and the shower starts cutting out.
  • Combi boilers. Scale on the plate heat exchanger throttles the hot water.
  • Dishwashers, washing machines and kettles all scale and go early.

A whole-house softener on the incoming mains stops every bit of it.

Which AquaSilk suits a Dublin house

On 200 mg/L water the AquaSilk Midi covers the four and five person semis in Finglas, Glasnevin, Santry, Coolock, Raheny, Clontarf, Castleknock and Clonsilla comfortably. The Mini fits under a kitchen sink and suits apartments, couples and the older terraces in Drumcondra, Phibsborough and Cabra. The Maxi is for big multi-bathroom houses in Howth, Sutton and Malahide. For an apartment with no drain near the mains, a scale conditioner cartridge is the practical alternative and we fit both. The size picker below marks the right one.

Getting it fitted in Dublin

We are a Dublin firm. CPS Plumbing & Electrical is based in Inchicore and EcoFilter Ireland is its water filtration side, so every Dublin install is done by our own plumbers from our own yard, usually within a few days of ordering. Order the softener fitted online or ring us, send a photo of your stop valve and the space beside it, and we book a morning or afternoon slot. Two to three hours and you have soft water. The fitted price shown is the full price anywhere in Dublin. For a quote first, use the quote form; the full range and the Ireland-wide hardness chart are on our main water softener page.

Water softener and drinking tap done yesterday by an absolute gentlemen named Iggy, he was efficient, tidy, clean and punctual, called me before hand to let me know roughly time arrives, did the job really professional, we would highly recommend the company and Iggy.

The difference in the water quality is amazing — softer water throughout the house and great-tasting drinking water straight from the tap. I'm very happy with both the products and the workmanship. Highly recommend EcoFilter Ireland to anyone thinking about improving their water quality!

We went for the complete setup: a whole house water softener, the Aplos Angel Direct Flow reverse osmosis drinking water system, and a spray hose triflow tap—and the difference has been amazing. Our entire home is now limescale free, which has made such a noticeable impact.

Questions from Dublin customers

Anything else, ring 01 554 6266 or email info@ecofilter.ie. You'll get a plumber, not a call centre.

Do you actually come out to Dublin?
Yes. Our own plumbers fit softeners in Dublin and across Finglas, Glasnevin, Santry, Coolock, Raheny, Clontarf, Drumcondra, Castleknock, Clonsilla, Lucan, Swords, Malahide, Howth, Clondalkin. The fitted price on this page is the full price for a Dublin install: the trip, the plumbing, the drain connection, commissioning and the first fill of salt. No mileage added on afterwards.
How hard is the water in Dublin, really?
North and west Dublin on Leixlip water is hard, around 200 mg/L, and north Fingal is very hard. South Dublin is soft at 75 and does not need a softener. Your Eircode tells you which. Anything over 200 mg/L is hard enough to coat an immersion element and block a shower head within a couple of years; over 300 it happens faster. Type your own Eircode into the checker at the top of the page for your street's reading.
Where does it go, and what does it need?
As close as possible to where the mains enters the house: under the kitchen sink, in a utility room, a garage or a hall press. It needs a standard socket, a drain for the rinse water (we run it to the nearest waste or gully), and room roughly the size of a kitchen bin for the Mini, a bit more for the Midi and Maxi.
Can I drink softened water?
Softening swaps hardness for a small amount of sodium. On very hard water that sodium adds up, so standard practice, and what we do on every job, is to leave the kitchen cold tap on unsoftened mains for drinking and cooking. If you also want better-tasting drinking water, an under-sink filter on that tap covers it and we can fit both on the same visit.
I'm on a private well near Dublin. Is a softener still the answer?
Often, but not always. Well water in this part of the country is usually hard, but it can also carry iron, manganese or bacteria that a softener alone won't deal with. We send your sample to an accredited lab and specify the system off the results, which might be a softener on its own or a softener with a filter in front of it. See our well water treatment page.
How much salt does it use and where do I get it?
Tablet salt in 25 kg bags, from most hardware shops and from us. A family of four on hard water gets through a bag roughly every four to eight weeks; a couple in an apartment, less. The unit only regenerates when it needs to, so light use means less salt.
How long does the install take?
Two to three hours for a straightforward fit. We ask for a photo of the stop valve and the space beforehand, so surprises on the day are rare. We connect it, set it for your hardness, add the first salt and show you how to top it up.
What about the warranty and servicing?
Every AquaSilk comes with a 10-year parts warranty, kept valid by an annual service. We do the service ourselves: a short visit to check the valve, the regeneration settings and the salt, and clear any build-up. We text you when it's due.
Can I pay in instalments?
Humm interest-free finance available at checkout. Cards and bank transfer are fine too.

Not sure which size for your Dublin home? Ask a plumber.

Send us your Eircode and a photo of where the mains comes into the house. We'll come back with the right size, what it'll cost fitted, and whether a softener is even the right answer for your water.
