What comes out of your tap where you live
Irish mains water is safe to drink and chlorinated everywhere. What changes is the taste and how much dissolved calcium comes with it. Put in your Eircode and we'll tell you what your supply is like.

What the filter takes out
Reverse osmosis is the same process used to make bottled water. Tap any one for the detail.
Chlorine and tasteCarbon stages
The swimming-pool note in Dublin water, and the chlorine by-products that come with it.
Limescale and mineralsRO membrane
The calcium and magnesium that scale the kettle and cloud the tea. Only a membrane removes these.
Lead and heavy metalsRO membrane
Lead from old service pipes and solder, copper from the house plumbing.

Particles thousands of times larger than the membrane's pores. They don't get through.

A drinking filter is not a substitute for a safe supply: if your water is not safe to drink untreated, it needs proper disinfection first.
Why we don't quote removal percentages
They depend on your water, your pressure and the age of the membrane. A membrane also physically excludes bacteria and cysts, but we don't sell it as a disinfection system. Ask us and we'll show you the manufacturer's test data for the system you're looking at.
What happens under the sink
Tap a stage to see what it does. The first five are in every system; the mineraliser comes with the EcoSoft Standard Pro and is what gives it its taste.
Sediment
A 5-micron filter catches rust, sand and grit so nothing downstream clogs.
Granular carbon
Adsorbs chlorine and the compounds that give tap water its taste and smell. Also protects the membrane, which chlorine would damage.
Carbon block
A denser carbon stage for the finer organics, pesticides and what the first carbon missed.
Reverse osmosis membrane
Water is pushed through a membrane with pores about a ten-thousandth of a micron. Dissolved minerals, metals, nitrates, fluoride and microplastics stay on the other side and go to drain.
Post carbon
A final polish as the water leaves the tank, so it tastes of nothing at all.
Mineraliser
Puts a little calcium and magnesium back so the water has body and a slightly alkaline, spring-water taste rather than the flat taste of pure RO.

The honest comparison. A jug is fine if chlorine is your only complaint.

Running cost is the filter kit if you change it yourself, or about €150 if we do it. Reverse osmosis sends some water to drain while it works: a tank system roughly three litres for every litre made, a direct-flow system less. On a metered supply that's cents a day. If you're on a well with iron or bacteria, none of these is the answer on its own; start here instead.

Doesn't reverse osmosis take the good minerals out too?
Yes, it takes nearly everything dissolved out, calcium and magnesium included. Your food supplies far more of those than water does, so it isn't a health issue, but pure RO water tastes flat to some people. That's what the mineraliser on the EcoSoft Standard Pro is for: it puts a little mineral back for taste. It can be added to the Direct Flow as well.
Does it need its own tap?
Yes. The filtered water comes out of a small separate tap beside your main one, so you're not sending filtered water down the sink for washing up. We drill the sink or worktop for it on the day. If you'd prefer one tap for everything, a three-way tap does that; ask and we'll price it.
How much space does it need?
The tank systems need roughly the space of a large bucket under the sink for the filters plus a 5-litre tank beside them. The Direct Flow has no tank and stands about the size of a shoebox on end. Send us a photo under the sink and we'll tell you which fits.
How often does it need a filter change?
Once a year for the sediment and carbon filters; the membrane every two to three years depending on your water. We text you when it's due. A filter kit from us is about €89 and takes ten minutes to fit yourself, or we call out, change them and check the system for about €150.
Does it waste water?
Some. A membrane works by pushing clean water through and sending the concentrated leftovers to drain, so a tank system uses roughly three litres for every litre it makes; the Direct Flow is more efficient. For a family it comes to about the same as one extra toilet flush a day.
Will it work with my water pressure?
Tank systems need reasonable mains pressure to push water through the membrane; on a very weak supply or a gravity-fed tank we fit a small booster pump. We'll ask about your pressure before the install.
I have a softener already. Do I still need this?
The softener stops limescale in the house; it doesn't improve the taste, and we leave the kitchen cold tap unsoftened for drinking. A filter on that tap gives you the drinking water. The two go together well, and we fit a lot of both on the one visit.
I'm renting. Can I take it with me?
Yes. It comes out in half an hour and goes into the next kitchen. The only thing left behind is a small hole in the sink or worktop for the tap, which a blanking plug covers.
What about the warranty and servicing?
Every system comes with a 10-year parts warranty, kept valid by an annual filter change. Do it yourself with a kit from us (about €89) or have us call out and do it with a check-over (about €150); either way we text you when it's due.
Can I pay in instalments?
Humm interest-free finance available at checkout. Cards and bank transfer are fine too.
