What comes out of your tap where you live
Irish mains water is safe to drink and chlorinated everywhere. What changes from one supply to the next is the taste, and how much dissolved calcium comes with it. Put in your Eircode and we'll tell you what your supply is like and which stage of the filter matters most for you.

What the filter takes out, and which stage does it
Reverse osmosis is the same process used to make bottled water and to desalinate seawater. Each stage handles something the one before it can't.
Grit and sediment
Rust flakes and particles from old mains and the pipework in the house.
Sediment stageChlorine and taste
The swimming-pool note in Dublin water, and the chlorine by-products that come with it.
Carbon stagesDissolved minerals and limescale
The calcium and magnesium that scale the kettle and cloud the tea. Only a membrane removes these.

Lead from old service pipes and solder, copper from the house plumbing.

RO membraneA membrane also physically excludes bacteria and cysts, but a drinking filter is not a substitute for a safe supply: if your water is not safe to drink untreated, it needs proper disinfection first. We don't quote removal percentages on this page because they depend on your water, your pressure and the age of the membrane; ask us and we'll show you the manufacturer's test data for the system you're looking at.
Six stages, one under-sink cabinet

Sediment
A 5-micron filter catches rust, sand and grit so nothing downstream clogs.
Granular carbon
Adsorbs chlorine and the compounds that give tap water its taste and smell. Also protects the membrane, which chlorine would damage.
Carbon block
A denser carbon stage for the finer organics, pesticides and what the first carbon missed.
Reverse osmosis membrane
Water is pushed through a membrane with pores about a ten-thousandth of a micron. Dissolved minerals, metals, nitrates, fluoride and microplastics stay on the other side and go to drain.
Post carbon
A final polish as the water leaves the tank, so it tastes of nothing at all.
Mineraliser
Puts a little calcium and magnesium back so the water has body and a slightly alkaline, spring-water taste rather than the flat taste of pure RO.

Reverse osmosis sends some water to drain while it works: a tank system roughly three litres for every litre made, a direct-flow system less. On a metered supply that's cents a day. If you're on a well with iron or bacteria, none of these is the answer on its own; start here instead.
