Reverse osmosis drinking water system and storage tank fitted in a kitchen sink cupboard

Reverse osmosis is the most thorough drinking water filter you can fit under a kitchen sink, and it's the one people are least sure about on price. It costs more than a jug filter but about half what a fitted water softener does. Below are our real 2026 prices, what's included when we fit one, what it costs to run each year, and how it stacks up against buying bottled water.

Quick answer

  • Supply only: €275.99 to €439 for an under-sink reverse osmosis system
  • Supplied and fitted: €399 to €599, fitted by our own plumbers in about two hours
  • Running costs: a set of filters once a year, from €64.99 if you change them yourself, or €149 to €219 if we do it
  • Cost per litre: about 5c, against around 30c a litre for bottled water in 5-litre bottles

Reverse osmosis prices in Ireland: our 2026 price list

These are the prices on our website as of October 2026, VAT included. Every system comes either supply only, for you or your own plumber to fit, or supplied and fitted by our own plumbers. We fit nationwide except Donegal, Kerry, Leitrim and Sligo, and supply-only orders ship everywhere.

System What it is Supply only Supplied and fitted
5 Stage Reverse Osmosis (TX model) Tank system with its own drinking water tap. The straightforward option €275.99 €399
EcoSoft Standard Pro Mineralizer Tank system with a mineraliser stage that puts calcium and magnesium back for taste €289.99 €449
Aplos Angel Direct Flow Tankless and compact. Needs a socket under the sink €439 €599
Water softener plus reverse osmosis Soft water for the whole house and filtered drinking water at the kitchen sink Fitted only €1,199

Don't want a second tap on the sink? A 3-way kitchen tap gives you hot, cold and filtered water from one spout, so there's no extra hole. Our 3-way taps start at €249 supply only. Here's how a 3-way tap works. You can also spread the cost of any system with humm finance at checkout (subject to approval).

Tank or tankless: which one?

Reverse osmosis pushes water through a very fine membrane, which takes time. There are two ways of dealing with that.

Tank systems (the 5 Stage and the Standard Pro) make water slowly and store it in a small pressurised tank under the sink, so a full jug is always ready. They run on mains pressure with no electricity. The trade-off is space: the filter unit and the tank need most of a standard sink cupboard.

Direct flow systems (the Aplos Angel) make water on demand with a small built-in pump, so there's no tank. The unit is slim, fills a glass about as fast as the normal tap, and sends less water to drain. It needs a standard 3-pin socket under the sink. Our guide to tankless reverse osmosis goes into more detail.

What's included when we fit it

A fitted price from us covers a standard installation in one visit, usually about two hours:

  • The reverse osmosis unit (and tank, if it has one) mounted neatly in the cupboard
  • A dedicated drinking water tap, drilled and fitted
  • A feed valve on the cold mains and a drain connection on the sink waste
  • Flushing and commissioning, so you pour the first glass before we leave
  • A quick walk-through on changing the filters

Before the visit we ask for a photo of the space under your sink. If the system won't fit, we tell you beforehand and refund the installation charge.

What can change the price

  • A 3-way tap instead of a separate tap. You pay for the tap, but you lose the extra hole and the second spout.
  • Low mains pressure. Tank systems work best on about 3 bar or more. Below that, a booster pump may be needed, or a direct flow system is the better fit.
  • A tight cupboard. A deep sink bowl, a waste disposal or a boiling water tap tank can leave no room for a tank. The slimmer Aplos Angel usually solves it.
  • Where the tap goes. If it's going through a stone or quartz worktop rather than the sink deck, tell us when you ask for a price.
  • Private well water. Reverse osmosis is not a disinfection system. On a well, we arrange analysis through an independent accredited lab first, and bacteria, iron or manganese have to be dealt with before the water reaches the membrane. See our well water treatment page.

Running costs: what reverse osmosis costs to own

Filters

The sediment and carbon filters are changed every 6 to 12 months depending on your water and how much you use, and most homes do it once a year. The membrane lasts about 2 to 3 years in most households.

System Filter pack, fit it yourself Changed by us
5 Stage Reverse Osmosis €64.99 €149
EcoSoft Standard Pro €74.99 €149
Aplos Angel Direct Flow €114.99 €219

On systems we fit, keeping up the yearly filter change is also what keeps the extended parts warranty valid. Not sure if yours is due? Here are the signs your filter needs replacing.

Water

Reverse osmosis rinses what it removes to drain as it works. A tank system sends roughly three litres to drain for every litre of drinking water it makes, and a direct flow system wastes less. For a family using 4 litres of drinking and cooking water a day, that's about 12 litres a day, or roughly 4,400 litres a year. Irish households don't pay for normal domestic water use, and Uisce Éireann's household allowance is 213,000 litres a year, so it's about 2% of that.

Electricity

Tank systems use none. The Aplos Angel uses a little to run its pump while it's making water.

Reverse osmosis vs bottled water: the real cost

Take a family of four using 4 litres a day for drinking, tea, coffee and cooking. That's about 1,460 litres a year.

Cost per litre Cost per year
Bottled water, 5-litre bottles around 30c about €440
Bottled water, 2-litre bottles around 50c about €730
Reverse osmosis (Standard Pro filters, fitted yourself) about 5c about €75

Our estimate. Bottled water prices vary by shop and brand. Filter cost is the yearly Standard Pro pack spread over 1,460 litres.

On those numbers, a fitted Standard Pro at €449 pays for itself against 5-litre bottles in roughly 15 months, and there's no more lugging bottles home or filling the recycling bin. More on that in Ditch Bottled Water.

Is reverse osmosis worth it?

Public water in Ireland is treated and tested, and for most homes it's safe to drink. Reverse osmosis is about taste, and about taking out the things a simple carbon filter can't. It's worth it if:

  • Your tap water tastes or smells of chlorine
  • You live in an older house that may still have lead pipework (see lead in Dublin tap water)
  • You'd rather reduce fluoride, nitrates or PFAS in what you drink
  • You're buying bottled water every week
  • You're on hard water and fed up descaling the kettle

If you also have a water softener, reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap is a good pairing, because it takes out the extra sodium as well. See can you drink softened water?

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to fit a reverse osmosis system?

About two hours for a standard installation. A long run to the drain, low pressure or a stone worktop can add time, and we'll tell you if that applies when we quote.

Can I fit a reverse osmosis system myself?

Yes, if you're handy. Every system is available supply only. You'll need to drill the hole for the tap, fit the feed valve on the cold supply and fit the drain saddle on the sink waste, then flush the system before use.

Does reverse osmosis remove fluoride?

Yes. The membrane reduces fluoride along with other dissolved salts such as nitrates. A jug or carbon filter on its own won't. More in our guide to fluoride in Irish tap water.

Does reverse osmosis take the minerals out of water?

Yes, most of them, which is why some people find plain RO water tastes flat. The Standard Pro has a mineraliser stage that puts calcium and magnesium back, so it tastes more like good spring water.

Will it affect the water pressure in the house?

No. Only the drinking water tap is fed through the system. Everything else in the house runs as before.
