EPSAquaSilk water softeners, fitted by CPS Plumbing & Electrical

What size water softener do I need?

Tell us who lives in the house, how many bathrooms you have and your Eircode. You'll see which AquaSilk fits, whether your water is hard enough to need one, and the full price fitted.

How many people live in the house?
How many bathrooms and en-suites?
Where does your water come from?

The first three characters will do. We don't store it.

The one for your house

AquaSilk Mini

Four people, two bathrooms.

How we size a water softener

A softener holds a bed of resin beads that take the hardness out of your water. When the resin is full it rinses itself through with salt water, which is called regenerating, and it does that on its own, usually overnight. Size is about having enough resin to keep up with your house.

People

Everyone in the house adds showers, washing and dishes. More water through the softener every day means more resin to keep up.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms decide how much water runs at the same time. Three or more showers on a busy morning needs a bigger unit so the flow keeps up.

Hardness

Your Eircode tells us how hard your mains water is. Under 100 mg/L you don't need a softener at all. Harder water just means it regenerates more often.

Mains or well

The AquaSilk range is for mains water. On a private well we build a Clack system to suit your water test report, with iron, manganese or bacteria treated first.

Why not just fit the biggest one?

A bigger softener costs more and takes up more room, and it does nothing extra for a small household. The Mini fits under most kitchen sinks. The Midi and Maxi usually go in a utility room, garage or hall press.

What if it's too small?

An undersized softener has to regenerate more often and can run short on a busy day, letting hard water through until it has recharged. That's why we size up for bigger households and houses with three or more bathrooms.

The three AquaSilk sizes

The one the calculator picks for you is marked. All three carry the same 10-year parts warranty with annual service. The difference is how much resin they hold, which sets how much water they soften between regenerations.

Parts of Ireland don't need one at all

Most of south Dublin gets soft water from the Ballymore Eustace and Vartry supplies, and so do Bray, Greystones and Wicklow town. Cavan town and Letterkenny are soft too. If the calculator says your water is soft, a softener won't earn its money, and we'd tell you the same on the phone.

The north and west of Dublin are a different story, and most of Meath, Kildare, Louth and the midlands are hard or very hard.

Sizing questions

Still not sure? Ring 01 554 6266 or email info@ecofilter.ie. You'll get a plumber, not a call centre.

Can a water softener be too big?
Not in a way that does any harm, but you'd pay more and give up more space for nothing. A couple in a one-bathroom house doesn't need a Maxi. The Mini will do the same job for them and fits under the kitchen sink.
Do I need a bigger softener for very hard water?
Not usually. Very hard water makes any softener regenerate more often, and it does that by itself. For Irish homes the size comes down to how many people live there and how many bathrooms you have. Your hardness decides whether a softener is worth having, and we set it up for your water when we fit it.
What size softener for an apartment?
Usually the Mini. It's compact enough to go under the kitchen sink, which in a lot of apartments is the only place the mains comes in. It needs a socket nearby and a drain for the rinse water, which the sink waste covers.
Does a combi boiler change the size?
No. A combi heats water straight off the mains, so softened water protects its heat exchanger from scale, but the size still comes down to people and bathrooms.
How much salt will it use?
That depends on how much water your house uses and how hard it is. Our softener salt guide covers which salt to buy and how often to top it up.
I'm on a private well. Will an AquaSilk do?
No. The AquaSilk range is for mains water only. On a well we build a Clack system to suit your water test report, with any iron, manganese or bacteria treated ahead of the softener. It's quoted from the report rather than sold online, and you pay on the day or by a payment link beforehand. No report yet? Order a well water test through us and the test fee comes off the install. Our guide to a softener on a private well explains what goes in first.
Can I drink softened water?
We leave the kitchen cold tap on unsoftened mains for drinking and cooking on every job, which is standard practice. Our guide on drinking softened water explains why.
Can I fit it myself?
Yes. Order it supply only and it ships free. It goes on the mains where it comes into the house, with a drain for the rinse water and a socket nearby, so you'll want a competent plumber. Or order it fitted and our own plumbers do the lot.
