How hard is the water across Kildare?

Kildare is really two waters. Most of the county, from Naas and Newbridge down to Kildare town, Monasterevin and Athy, drinks groundwater pumped out of the limestone and the Curragh gravels. Uisce Éireann's figure for Naas and Newbridge is around 325 mg/L of calcium carbonate, well into the very hard band. The north-east corner around Maynooth, Celbridge and Leixlip is on Liffey water from the Leixlip plant, the same supply as much of north Dublin, and reads around 200. Still hard, just not as hard.

Either way, scale builds in every cylinder, immersion, electric shower and combi boiler in the county. A whole-house softener on the incoming mains stops it.

Kildare towns we cover

Each of these has its own page with the local reading and supply:

We also fit in Clane, Sallins, Kill, Kilcullen, Prosperous, Kilcock, Monasterevin, Rathangan and Athy, and anywhere else in the county.

Which size suits a Kildare house

On 325 mg/L water the AquaSilk Midi is the usual fit for a three or four bed family home with two bathrooms. The Mini suits apartments, couples and smaller houses and fits under a kitchen sink. The Maxi is for big houses with three or more bathrooms. The size picker below marks the right one for your household.

Private wells in Kildare

Plenty of rural Kildare houses are on their own well. Well water here is usually hard, but it can also carry iron, manganese or bacteria that a softener on its own will not touch. For a well we send a sample to an accredited lab and specify the system off the results. See our well water treatment page.

Getting it fitted in Kildare

Every install is done by our own plumbers, not a subcontractor, and Kildare is on our doorstep from Dublin. Order the softener fitted online or ring us, send a photo of your stop valve and the space beside it, and we book a morning or afternoon slot. Two to three hours and you have soft water, with the first salt in the tank. For a price first, use the quote form. The full range and the Ireland-wide hardness chart are on our main water softener page.

Three sizes. Pick by household.

Bigger house, more people or very hard water means a bigger tank. Tell us the household and we'll mark the right one for a Co. Kildare home.

Water softener and drinking tap done yesterday by an absolute gentlemen named Iggy, he was efficient, tidy, clean and punctual, called me before hand to let me know roughly time arrives, did the job really professional, we would highly recommend the company and Iggy.

The difference in the water quality is amazing — softer water throughout the house and great-tasting drinking water straight from the tap. I'm very happy with both the products and the workmanship. Highly recommend EcoFilter Ireland to anyone thinking about improving their water quality!

We went for the complete setup: a whole house water softener, the Aplos Angel Direct Flow reverse osmosis drinking water system, and a spray hose triflow tap—and the difference has been amazing. Our entire home is now limescale free, which has made such a noticeable impact.

Questions from Co. Kildare customers

Anything else, ring 01 554 6266 or email info@ecofilter.ie. You'll get a plumber, not a call centre.

Do you actually come out to Co. Kildare?
Yes. Our own plumbers fit softeners in Co. Kildare and across Naas, Newbridge, Kildare town, Maynooth, Celbridge, Leixlip, Clane, Sallins, Kilcullen, Kilcock, Monasterevin, Athy. The fitted price on this page is the full price for a Co. Kildare install: the trip, the plumbing, the drain connection, commissioning and the first fill of salt. No mileage added on afterwards.
How hard is the water in Co. Kildare, really?
Most of Kildare is very hard, around 325 mg/L in Naas, Newbridge and Kildare town. Maynooth, Celbridge and Leixlip are on Liffey water and hard, around 200. Anything over 200 mg/L is hard enough to coat an immersion element and block a shower head within a couple of years; over 300 it happens faster. Type your own Eircode into the checker at the top of the page for your street's reading.
Where does it go, and what does it need?
As close as possible to where the mains enters the house: under the kitchen sink, in a utility room, a garage or a hall press. It needs a standard socket, a drain for the rinse water (we run it to the nearest waste or gully), and room roughly the size of a kitchen bin for the Mini, a bit more for the Midi and Maxi.
Can I drink softened water?
Softening swaps hardness for a small amount of sodium. On very hard water that sodium adds up, so standard practice, and what we do on every job, is to leave the kitchen cold tap on unsoftened mains for drinking and cooking. If you also want better-tasting drinking water, an under-sink filter on that tap covers it and we can fit both on the same visit.
I'm on a private well near Co. Kildare. Is a softener still the answer?
Often, but not always. Well water in this part of the country is usually hard, but it can also carry iron, manganese or bacteria that a softener alone won't deal with. We send your sample to an accredited lab and specify the system off the results, which might be a softener on its own or a softener with a filter in front of it. See our well water treatment page.
How much salt does it use and where do I get it?
Tablet salt in 25 kg bags, from most hardware shops and from us. A family of four on hard water gets through a bag roughly every four to eight weeks; a couple in an apartment, less. The unit only regenerates when it needs to, so light use means less salt.
How long does the install take?
Two to three hours for a straightforward fit. We ask for a photo of the stop valve and the space beforehand, so surprises on the day are rare. We connect it, set it for your hardness, add the first salt and show you how to top it up.
What about the warranty and servicing?
Every AquaSilk comes with a 10-year parts warranty, kept valid by an annual service. We do the service ourselves: a short visit to check the valve, the regeneration settings and the salt, and clear any build-up. We text you when it's due.
Can I pay in instalments?
Humm interest-free finance available at checkout. Cards and bank transfer are fine too.

Send us your Eircode and a photo of where the mains comes into the house. We'll come back with the right size, what it'll cost fitted, and whether a softener is even the right answer for your water.
