Well water treatment in Co. Kildare

On Kildare's limestone plains well water is usually hard, and in the Calp limestone of the north iron, manganese and a rotten-egg smell are common. The east uplands are softer. Testing comes first, every time.

  • 5,030 homes in Co. Kildare rely on a private well or other private supply, about 1 in 16 homes (Census 2022)
  • Every system specified from an independent lab report, never guessed
  • Fitted and serviced across Co. Kildare by our own plumbers, not a subcontractor

No report yet? Order a well water test and the fee comes off your install. Quotes back within one hour during office hours.

What to send us

Private wells in Co. Kildare

Kildare is mostly on mains, but not everywhere. The 2022 Census counted 5,030 households on a private well or other private supply, 6.1% of the county, and another 2,879 on a group water scheme. The share is highest around Athy (18.9%) and Clane (11.2%), and lowest around the bigger towns: 1.7% in the Newbridge area, 0.7% in Celbridge and 0.1% in Leixlip.

If you're on a well, no one monitors it for you. Household wells are classed as exempted supplies, so testing and treating the water is down to the owner, and every system we fit in Kildare starts from a lab report.

What's usually in a Kildare well

Hard water across the plains

The flat centre and west of the county sit on Carboniferous limestone, and around Athy, Monasterevin and Osberstown it's karst. The Geological Survey of Ireland (GSI) has no county-wide hardness figures for Kildare, but the Curragh Camp boreholes in the Curragh gravels give hard to very hard water, 250 to over 350 mg/L. For the Naas limestone it has no measurements and expects hard water by comparison with similar rock. Expect scale on kettles, immersion elements and shower heads.

Iron, manganese and rotten eggs in the north

In the Calp limestone of the northern lowlands, the GSI says high iron, manganese and hydrogen sulphide are common and cause considerable problems for people on private wells. It puts this mostly down to natural iron sulphide in the shalier rock and slow-moving groundwater. You'll see orange or brown staining and black specks, or notice a rotten-egg smell at the taps.

Softer, slightly acidic water in the east

The hillier east of the county, in the Wicklow foothills, and the Chair of Kildare are older Ordovician and Silurian rock, and the southern tip of the county is Leinster granite. In the east Kildare uplands the GSI found slightly hard water, 100 to 150 mg/L, with very low alkalinity and a pH mostly below 7, though not below 6. Water like that can slowly eat copper pipe, so watch for blue-green stains on sinks and baths.

What we usually fit in Kildare

On the limestone of the centre and west, the line usually runs in this order, with stages left out if the report doesn't need them:

  1. Sediment filter to protect everything after it.
  2. Iron and manganese filter, with catalytic carbon where there's a rotten-egg smell, ahead of the softener so it doesn't foul.
  3. Water softener for the hardness.
  4. UV disinfection if the report shows E. coli or coliforms, fitted last on the main line so the water reaching the lamp is clear.
  5. Reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap for drinking water, if you want it.

In the east Kildare uplands it's different: pH correction may be needed ahead of the iron filter, and a softener is often not needed. On mains water and only bothered by limescale? See our water softener page for Co. Kildare instead.

The well grant in Kildare

Kildare County Council's Rural Water Services runs the domestic well grant, on 045 980361 or ruralwater@kildarecoco.ie. To qualify, you have to show that the water has been tested and fails the quality standards, or that the well doesn't give enough water, so the lab report comes first. Bring it to the council with our itemised quote, and check the current terms before any work starts. We'll tell you which tests to order: iron, manganese, hardness, pH, nitrate, E. coli and coliforms at the very least. More in our well grant guide.

What's your water doing?

Tap what you've noticed. The ones marked are common in Co. Kildare. You only get the stages your report calls for, in this order.

Your well 1 Sediment filter sand, silt, rust 2 pH correction acidic water 3 Iron & manganese stains, smell, taste 4 Water softener limescale 5 UV disinfection bacteria Whole house 6 Kitchen tap RO drinking water

Tap a symptom above, or a stage on the line, to see what deals with it.

On mains water and only after better drinking water or less limescale? You don't need any of this. See drinking water filters or water softeners.

Test, send, fit

We don't guess on wells. A wrong guess usually costs more than the system.

Get the water tested

Fitz Scientific, an independent INAB-accredited lab in Drogheda, analyses a sample from your well. We don't test it ourselves, but you can order the right test through us. The Check Plus kit covers iron, manganese, hardness, pH, nitrate and bacteria.

The well grant in Co. Kildare

Treatment on a private well can qualify for a grant

The Domestic Private Well Grant pays 100% of approved water treatment costs up to €1,000, and 85% of the cost of fixing a well (up to €3,000) or drilling a new one (up to €5,000). The house must be more than seven years old and your main home, the council must inspect and approve before any work starts, and softeners are not covered. In Co. Kildare you apply to Kildare County Council. We give you an itemised quote for the application, which asks for three.

The council also needs a water test with the sample taken by a lab technician, not you. In Co. Kildare, Fitz Scientific's technician does it for €340. Book it through us, and if we fit the treatment within 90 days, the test fee comes off the job.

Questions from Co. Kildare

Anything else, ring 01 554 6266 or email info@ecofilter.ie. You'll get a plumber, not a call centre.

Why does Kildare well water have iron and a rotten-egg smell?
The Geological Survey says high iron, manganese and hydrogen sulphide are common in the Calp limestone of the northern lowlands, and cause real problems for people on private wells. It puts this mostly down to natural iron sulphide in the shalier rock and slow-moving groundwater. The right filter takes all three out, ahead of any softener.
Is well water softer anywhere in Kildare?
Yes, in the uplands of east Kildare, on granite and older rock. There the Geological Survey found slightly hard water of 100 to 150 mg/L with a pH mostly below 7, so pH correction matters more than a softener. On the limestone and the Curragh gravels, expect hard water.
Which parts of Kildare rely most on wells?
Census 2022 shows the most homes on a private well or other private supply around Athy (18.9%) and Clane (11.2%). In Celbridge it's 0.7% and in Leixlip 0.1%.
Do you come out to my part of Co. Kildare?
Yes. Our own plumbers fit and service well water systems right across Co. Kildare, including Athy, Naas, Newbridge, Kildare, Clane, Monasterevin, Kilcullen, Kill, Sallins, Castledermot, Maynooth, Celbridge. Send us your Eircode with the lab report and we'll confirm.
Do you test the water yourselves?
No. An independent, INAB-accredited lab does it, so the results are impartial. If you're applying for the well grant, the lab has to take the sample itself, not you. You can order the test through us: Fitz Scientific in Drogheda analyses it. The Check Plus kit covers iron, manganese, hardness, pH, nitrate and bacteria.
Why won't you quote a system up front?
Because we'd be guessing. Two wells on the same road in Co. Kildare can have very different water, and a system built on a guess either doesn't work or costs more than it should.
Is there a grant for well water treatment in Co. Kildare?
The Domestic Private Well Grant pays 100% of approved water treatment costs up to €1,000, and 85% of the cost of fixing a well (up to €3,000) or drilling a new one (up to €5,000). The house must be more than seven years old and your main home, the council must inspect and approve before any work starts, and softeners are not covered. In Co. Kildare it is run by Kildare County Council. Check the current terms with the council before you start, and we'll give you the itemised quote the application needs.
What looking-after does it need?
Salt for the softener, a new UV lamp once a year, a sediment cartridge now and then, and a service visit once a year. A repeat lab test every year is the proof the water is right.
