Well water treatment in Co. Galway

East and south Galway wells sit on fast-flowing karst limestone, so the water is hard and open to contamination, while Connemara granite gives softer, acidic water. Every well should be tested before anything is fitted.

  • 8,286 homes in Co. Galway rely on a private well or other private supply, about 1 in 8 homes (Census 2022)
  • Every system specified from an independent lab report, never guessed
  • Fitted and serviced across Co. Galway by our own plumbers, not a subcontractor

Private wells in Co. Galway

The 2022 Census counted 8,286 households in County Galway on a private well or other private supply, 12.2% of homes outside the city. Another 19,607, or 28.9%, are on a public or private group water scheme. Private supplies are most common around Loughrea (31.5% of homes), Gort and Kinvara (22.0%) and Conamara North (16.7%), while group schemes lead around Tuam (43.7%) and Ballinasloe (35.4%). In Galway City only 48 homes are on a private supply.

Nobody monitors a household well for you. It's classed as an exempted supply, so testing and treating it is down to the owner. Every system we fit in Galway starts with a lab report.

What's usually in a Galway well

Hard water on fast-moving karst

East Galway, from Athenry to Tuam, Monivea and Dunmore, sits on pure limestone that the Geological Survey of Ireland (GSI) classes as karst: rock dissolved into channels, swallow holes and caves. South Galway around Gort and Kinvara is almost all pure limestone too. GSI tracer tests in east Galway showed groundwater moving 100 to 450 metres an hour. In south Galway, hardness at Kinvara ranged from 168 to 372 mg/L and at Roo near Gort from 332 to 348 mg/L.

Bacteria

That speed is what makes karst wells vulnerable: whatever reaches the ground near a well, from a septic tank or a farmyard, can get into it quickly. Group schemes on the same ground have struggled. Ballinakill near Loughrea failed the E. coli standard in 2023, 2024 and 2025, and Monreagh/Tubber on the Clare border failed repeatedly. Galway's 2007 Cryptosporidium outbreak, which put about 90,000 people on a boil water notice, came from public supplies, not private wells. See bacteria in well water.

Iron and rotten-egg smell

Around Loughrea the rock is an impure limestone known as Calp. The water there is hard, 256 to 440 mg/L, iron runs from 0 to 0.9 mg/L, and the GSI says hydrogen sulphide, the rotten-egg smell, is frequently reported. On the sandstone towards the Slieve Aughty hills, small domestic wells tend to show raised iron and manganese.

Softer, acidic water in Connemara

From the south coast up to a line from Clifden to Maam Cross, Connemara is mostly granite, with acidic minerals, and the GSI warns that corrosion and leaching of iron and manganese may be a problem. It also says radon and uranium are associated with granite and present a risk to water quality. North of Clifden, wells measured 75 to 178 mg/L. See acidic water.

What we usually fit in Galway

East and south Galway wells usually need most of this line; Connemara wells start with pH correction and often skip the softener. In treatment order, with stages left out if the report doesn't call for them:

  1. Sediment filter to protect everything after it.
  2. pH correction where the water is acidic, as on the Connemara granite.
  3. Iron and manganese filter, which also deals with the rotten-egg smell and protects the softener.
  4. Water softener for the hard limestone water of the east and south.
  5. UV disinfection if the report shows E. coli or coliforms, fitted last on the main line so the water reaching the lamp is clear.
  6. Reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap for drinking water, if you want it.

On mains water and only bothered by limescale? See our water softener page for Co. Galway instead.

The well grant in Galway

Galway County Council's Rural Water section runs the individual well grant and names filtration and UV as examples of treatment. It wants three quotes for all works. You send your raw water test results and, if treatment is needed, three quotes for it. After approval and installation you send post-treatment results, then the council inspects and takes its own sample. We'll give you an itemised quote for the application.

What's your water doing?

Tap what you've noticed. The ones marked are common in Co. Galway. You only get the stages your report calls for, in this order.

Your well 1 Sediment filter sand, silt, rust 2 pH correction acidic water 3 Iron & manganese stains, smell, taste 4 Water softener limescale 5 UV disinfection bacteria Whole house 6 Kitchen tap RO drinking water

Tap a symptom above, or a stage on the line, to see what deals with it.

On mains water and only after better drinking water or less limescale? You don't need any of this. See drinking water filters or water softeners.

Test, send, fit

We don't guess on wells. A wrong guess usually costs more than the system.

Get the water tested

Fitz Scientific, an independent INAB-accredited lab in Drogheda, analyses a sample from your well. We don't test it ourselves, but you can order the right test through us. The Check Plus kit covers iron, manganese, hardness, pH, nitrate and bacteria.

The well grant in Co. Galway

Treatment on a private well can qualify for a grant

The Domestic Private Well Grant pays 100% of approved water treatment costs up to €1,000, and 85% of the cost of fixing a well (up to €3,000) or drilling a new one (up to €5,000). The house must be more than seven years old and your main home, the council must inspect and approve before any work starts, and softeners are not covered. In Co. Galway you apply to Galway County Council. We give you an itemised quote for the application, which asks for three.

The council also needs a water test with the sample taken by a lab technician, not you. Your council can tell you which accredited labs sample in Co. Galway.

Questions from Co. Galway

Anything else, ring 01 554 6266 or email info@ecofilter.ie. You'll get a plumber, not a call centre.

Why are east Galway wells so open to contamination?
East and south Galway sit on karst limestone, rock dissolved into channels, swallow holes and caves. Geological Survey tracer tests showed groundwater moving 100 to 450 metres an hour, so pollution from a septic tank or farmyard can reach a well fast. A lab test is the only way to know if yours is affected.
Did the 2007 Galway Cryptosporidium outbreak come from wells?
No. It came from public supplies: two supplies showed raised levels of the parasite and neither was treated by filtration, and about 90,000 people were put on a boil water notice. The EPA cites it as an example of a poorly protected source being contaminated.
Is Connemara well water different?
Yes. Most of Connemara is granite, which gives softer water with acidic minerals, and the Geological Survey warns that corrosion and leaching of iron and manganese may be a problem. It also flags radon and uranium as a risk with granite, so ask the lab about them, and expect pH correction to matter more than a softener.
Do you come out to my part of Co. Galway?
Yes. Our own plumbers fit and service well water systems right across Co. Galway, including Loughrea, Athenry, Tuam, Gort, Kinvara, Craughwell, Ballinasloe, Oranmore, Headford, Oughterard, Portumna, Clifden. Send us your Eircode with the lab report and we'll confirm.
Do you test the water yourselves?
No. An independent, INAB-accredited lab does it, so the results are impartial. If you're applying for the well grant, the lab has to take the sample itself, not you. You can order the test through us: Fitz Scientific in Drogheda analyses it. The Check Plus kit covers iron, manganese, hardness, pH, nitrate and bacteria.
Why won't you quote a system up front?
Because we'd be guessing. Two wells on the same road in Co. Galway can have very different water, and a system built on a guess either doesn't work or costs more than it should.
Is there a grant for well water treatment in Co. Galway?
The Domestic Private Well Grant pays 100% of approved water treatment costs up to €1,000, and 85% of the cost of fixing a well (up to €3,000) or drilling a new one (up to €5,000). The house must be more than seven years old and your main home, the council must inspect and approve before any work starts, and softeners are not covered. In Co. Galway it is run by Galway County Council. Check the current terms with the council before you start, and we'll give you the itemised quote the application needs.
What looking-after does it need?
Salt for the softener, a new UV lamp once a year, a sediment cartridge now and then, and a service visit once a year. A repeat lab test every year is the proof the water is right.
