Private wells in Co. Monaghan

Monaghan is group scheme country. The 2022 Census found 9,217 households, 40.3%, on public or private group water schemes, the highest share of any county or city, and only 45.1% on public mains, the lowest. Another 3,025 homes, 13.2%, are on a private well or other private supply. That share is highest in Ballybay-Clones (19.5%), then Carrickmacross-Castleblayney (12.8%) and the Monaghan area (8.7%).

A household well is classed as an exempted supply, so nobody checks it except you. Every system we fit in Monaghan starts from a lab report.

What's usually in a Monaghan well

Hard to very hard water

The Geological Survey of Ireland (GSI) sampled 87 sources in Monaghan, private wells among them. Of those, 28% were excessively hard (over 350 mg/L), 48% hard (251 to 350), 18% moderately hard (151 to 250) and only 6% slightly hard (under 150). The softer water is in the Carrickmacross and Knockatallon/Tydavnet aquifers and the older sandstone and shale. Expect scale everywhere hot water goes.

Iron and manganese

High iron and manganese, often above the drinking water limit, are widespread and mostly natural. The GSI recorded iron up to 25 mg/L, though half the samples were at or under 0.3 mg/L, and manganese up to 3 mg/L. That's enough to stain sinks and laundry and to foul a softener.

Bacteria

Faecal coliforms turned up in 9 of the supply sources the GSI examined (26%), mostly council and group scheme sources. In the Carrickmacross karst limestone, the only karst aquifer in the county, they were found in 4 of 6 sources, including the Nafarty spring and borehole, and nitrate there runs higher than elsewhere in Monaghan. The GSI concluded that septic tanks, landspreading and farmyards all contribute. See bacteria in well water.

Natural fluoride and sulphate

Fluoride ranges from 0.04 to 3.5 mg/L, and the GSI found levels above the drinking water limit occurring naturally in the Knockatallon/Tydavnet aquifer in the north-west. Sulphate runs from 2 to 2,400 mg/L, with levels over 500 mg/L mainly in deep, high-yielding wells in the Monaghan to Clones aquifer, linked to gypsum-type beds. You can't see either, so if you're in those areas, ask the lab to include them.

What we usually fit in Monaghan

For most Monaghan wells, the line runs in this order, with stages left out if the report doesn't call for them:

  1. Sediment filter to protect everything after it.
  2. Iron and manganese filter, ahead of the softener so it doesn't foul.
  3. Water softener sized for hard to very hard water.
  4. UV disinfection if the report shows E. coli or coliforms, fitted last on the main line so the water reaching the lamp is clear.
  5. Reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap, which also brings fluoride and sulphate down in the water you drink.

The well grant in Monaghan

Monaghan County Council's Water Services and Rural Water Department, at MTEK 1, Armagh Road, Knockaconny, Monaghan, handles well grants, on 047 73769 or 047 73763. Get the lab report first, send it to us for an itemised quote to go with the application, and check the current terms with the council before any work starts. We'll tell you which tests to order: iron, manganese, hardness, pH, nitrate, E. coli and coliforms at the very least, plus fluoride or sulphate where they apply. More in our well grant guide.

What's your water doing?

Tap what you've noticed. The ones marked are common in Co. Monaghan. You only get the stages your report calls for, in this order.

Your well 1 Sediment filter sand, silt, rust 2 pH correction acidic water 3 Iron & manganese stains, smell, taste 4 Water softener limescale 5 UV disinfection bacteria Whole house 6 Kitchen tap RO drinking water

Tap a symptom above, or a stage on the line, to see what deals with it.

On mains water and only after better drinking water or less limescale? You don't need any of this. See drinking water filters or water softeners.

Test, send, fit

We don't guess on wells. A wrong guess usually costs more than the system.

Get the water tested

Fitz Scientific, an independent INAB-accredited lab in Drogheda, analyses a sample from your well. We don't test it ourselves, but you can order the right test through us. The Check Plus kit covers iron, manganese, hardness, pH, nitrate and bacteria.

The well grant in Co. Monaghan

Treatment on a private well can qualify for a grant

The Domestic Private Well Grant pays 100% of approved water treatment costs up to €1,000, and 85% of the cost of fixing a well (up to €3,000) or drilling a new one (up to €5,000). The house must be more than seven years old and your main home, the council must inspect and approve before any work starts, and softeners are not covered. In Co. Monaghan you apply to Monaghan County Council. We give you an itemised quote for the application, which asks for three.

The council also needs a water test with the sample taken by a lab technician, not you. In Co. Monaghan, Fitz Scientific's technician does it for €330. Book it through us, and if we fit the treatment within 90 days, the test fee comes off the job.

Questions from Co. Monaghan

Anything else, ring 01 554 6266 or email info@ecofilter.ie. You'll get a plumber, not a call centre.

Is there natural fluoride in Monaghan well water?
In places. The Geological Survey found fluoride from 0.04 to 3.5 mg/L across Monaghan, with levels above the drinking water limit occurring naturally in the Knockatallon and Tydavnet area in the north-west. If you're there, ask the lab to include fluoride; reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap brings it down in the water you drink.
Why is Monaghan well water so hard?
Of 87 sources the Geological Survey sampled, private wells among them, 28% were excessively hard (over 350 mg/L) and 48% hard (251 to 350 mg/L). Softer water is found in the Carrickmacross and Knockatallon/Tydavnet aquifers and the older sandstone and shale. A softener deals with it, after any iron and manganese filter.
Which parts of Monaghan rely most on wells?
Census 2022 puts 19.5% of homes in Ballybay-Clones on a private well or other private supply, 12.8% in Carrickmacross-Castleblayney and 8.7% in the Monaghan area. Group schemes are bigger again: 40.3% of homes across the county, the highest share of any county.
Do you come out to my part of Co. Monaghan?
Yes. Our own plumbers fit and service well water systems right across Co. Monaghan, including Monaghan, Carrickmacross, Castleblayney, Clones, Ballybay, Emyvale, Smithborough, Glaslough, Scotstown, Inniskeen, Newbliss. Send us your Eircode with the lab report and we'll confirm.
Do you test the water yourselves?
No. An independent, INAB-accredited lab does it, so the results are impartial. If you're applying for the well grant, the lab has to take the sample itself, not you. You can order the test through us: Fitz Scientific in Drogheda analyses it. The Check Plus kit covers iron, manganese, hardness, pH, nitrate and bacteria.
Why won't you quote a system up front?
Because we'd be guessing. Two wells on the same road in Co. Monaghan can have very different water, and a system built on a guess either doesn't work or costs more than it should.
Is there a grant for well water treatment in Co. Monaghan?
The Domestic Private Well Grant pays 100% of approved water treatment costs up to €1,000, and 85% of the cost of fixing a well (up to €3,000) or drilling a new one (up to €5,000). The house must be more than seven years old and your main home, the council must inspect and approve before any work starts, and softeners are not covered. In Co. Monaghan it is run by Monaghan County Council. Check the current terms with the council before you start, and we'll give you the itemised quote the application needs.
What looking-after does it need?
Salt for the softener, a new UV lamp once a year, a sediment cartridge now and then, and a service visit once a year. A repeat lab test every year is the proof the water is right.
