Well water treatment in Co. Longford

Longford well water is usually hard to very hard, and iron, manganese and a rotten-egg smell are common in the muddier limestones. Karst wells near Lough Ree are highly vulnerable to bacteria, so test before fitting anything.

Private wells in Co. Longford

The 2022 Census counted 1,670 Longford households on a private well or other private source, 10.3% of the county and 4,730 people. That's up slightly from 1,644 homes in 2016. Another 1,361 homes are on a group water scheme, and 78.8% are on public mains.

A household well is exempt from the drinking water regulations, so nobody checks it for you. The EPA advises testing it at least once a year, and every system we fit in Longford starts with a lab report.

What's usually in a Longford well

The Geological Survey of Ireland (GSI) has no county groundwater report for Longford, so what follows comes from its reports on the individual groundwater bodies, based mostly on council and group scheme sources rather than household wells. Private wells in the same rock usually share the same water.

Hard to very hard water

Across much of the county the rock is impure limestone, sandstone and shale, and the GSI puts the groundwater there at hard to very hard, typically 380 to 450 mg/L. Along Lough Ree around Lanesborough it describes the karst limestone water as slightly hard to very hard and warns that lime-scale can be problematic. Trial wells just north of Longford town measured 246 to 394 mg/L, and the Slawn spring at Newtown Cashel 280 to 460 mg/L. The older Ordovician rock in the north has given anything from soft to moderately hard water where the GSI has sampled it elsewhere.

Iron, manganese and a rotten-egg smell

In the impure limestones and the sandstone and shale, the GSI says iron and manganese frequently fluctuate between zero and more than the EU limits, and hydrogen sulphide can often reach unacceptable levels. Both metals were over the limit in the 1999 trial wells near Newtownforbes, and at Newtown Cashel in 1996. Iron shows as orange or brown staining, manganese as black specks, and the sulphide as a rotten-egg smell, usually worst from the hot tap.

Bacteria

The GSI calls the karst limestone around Lough Ree highly vulnerable to pollution from septic tanks, farmyards, landspreading and streams that sink underground. At the Slawn spring at Newtown Cashel, an EPA monitoring point, faecal coliforms turned up in half of all samples, with gross contamination three times, which the GSI links to fast travel through the cracked limestone. You can't see, smell or taste bacteria, so only a lab test tells you. See our guide to bacteria in well water.

What we usually fit in Longford

Most Longford wells need some or all of this line, in this order, with any stage the report doesn't call for left out. On water this hard, pH correction is rarely needed.

  1. Sediment filter to protect everything after it.
  2. Iron and manganese filter, which takes the rotten-egg smell too. Both metals foul a softener if they reach it.
  3. Water softener sized for water that can run past 400 mg/L.
  4. UV disinfection if the report shows E. coli or coliforms, fitted last on the main line so the water reaching the lamp is clear.
  5. Reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap for drinking water, if you want it.

The well grant in Longford

Longford County Council's Water Services section administers grants for the provision and improvement of individual water supplies, listed on its Water Schemes page. Ask Water Services for the form and terms before any work starts. A house connected to Uisce Éireann or a group water scheme doesn't qualify, and nor does one that has had a water supply grant in the past seven years. Bring the council your lab report and our itemised quote. Our guide to the private well grant explains the rest.

What's your water doing?

Tap what you've noticed. The ones marked are common in Co. Longford. You only get the stages your report calls for, in this order.

On mains water and only after better drinking water or less limescale? You don't need any of this. See drinking water filters or water softeners.

Test, send, fit

We don't guess on wells. A wrong guess usually costs more than the system.

Get the water tested

Fitz Scientific, an independent INAB-accredited lab in Drogheda, analyses a sample from your well. We don't test it ourselves, but you can order the right test through us. The Check Plus kit covers iron, manganese, hardness, pH, nitrate and bacteria.

The well grant in Co. Longford

Treatment on a private well can qualify for a grant

The Domestic Private Well Grant pays 100% of approved water treatment costs up to €1,000, and 85% of the cost of fixing a well (up to €3,000) or drilling a new one (up to €5,000). The house must be more than seven years old and your main home, the council must inspect and approve before any work starts, and softeners are not covered. In Co. Longford you apply to Longford County Council. We give you an itemised quote for the application, which asks for three.

The council also needs a water test with the sample taken by a lab technician, not you. In Co. Longford, Fitz Scientific's technician does it for €320. Book it through us, and if we fit the treatment within 90 days, the test fee comes off the job.

Questions from Co. Longford

Anything else, ring 01 554 6266 or email info@ecofilter.ie. You'll get a plumber, not a call centre.

Why is my Longford well water so hard?
Much of Longford sits on limestone, or on mixed sandstone, shale and limestone, and rain picks up calcium as it soaks through. The Geological Survey puts groundwater in the impure limestones at typically 380 to 450 mg/L, which is very hard. A softener deals with it, but iron and manganese have to come out first.
Why does my Longford well smell of rotten eggs?
That's hydrogen sulphide. The Geological Survey says it can often reach unacceptable levels in Longford's impure limestones, sandstones and shales, where iron and manganese also fluctuate above the EU limits. The filter that takes out the iron generally takes the smell too.
Is a well near Lough Ree more at risk of bacteria?
It can be. The Geological Survey calls the karst limestone around Lanesborough and Lough Ree highly vulnerable to pollution from septic tanks, farmyards, landspreading and sinking streams. Test for E. coli and coliforms at least once a year, as the EPA advises.
Do you come out to my part of Co. Longford?
Yes. Our own plumbers fit and service well water systems right across Co. Longford, including Longford, Edgeworthstown, Ballymahon, Lanesborough, Granard, Drumlish, Newtownforbes, Keenagh, Ballinalee, Legan, Killashee, Newtown Cashel. Send us your Eircode with the lab report and we'll confirm.
Do you test the water yourselves?
No. An independent, INAB-accredited lab does it, so the results are impartial. If you're applying for the well grant, the lab has to take the sample itself, not you. You can order the test through us: Fitz Scientific in Drogheda analyses it. The Check Plus kit covers iron, manganese, hardness, pH, nitrate and bacteria.
Why won't you quote a system up front?
Because we'd be guessing. Two wells on the same road in Co. Longford can have very different water, and a system built on a guess either doesn't work or costs more than it should.
Is there a grant for well water treatment in Co. Longford?
The Domestic Private Well Grant pays 100% of approved water treatment costs up to €1,000, and 85% of the cost of fixing a well (up to €3,000) or drilling a new one (up to €5,000). The house must be more than seven years old and your main home, the council must inspect and approve before any work starts, and softeners are not covered. In Co. Longford it is run by Longford County Council. Check the current terms with the council before you start, and we'll give you the itemised quote the application needs.
What looking-after does it need?
Salt for the softener, a new UV lamp once a year, a sediment cartridge now and then, and a service visit once a year. A repeat lab test every year is the proof the water is right.
