Well water treatment in Co. Clare

Bacteria are the biggest risk in Clare wells, where thin soil and karst limestone let them in fast. Iron and manganese are common and the limestone water is hard, so every well should be tested first.

  • 5,191 homes in Co. Clare rely on a private well or other private supply, about 1 in 9 homes (Census 2022)
  • Every system specified from an independent lab report, never guessed
  • Fitted and serviced across Co. Clare by our own plumbers, not a subcontractor

No report yet? Order a well water test and the fee comes off your install. Quotes back within one hour during office hours.

What to send us

  • Your lab report PDF, photo or scan
  • Your Eircode and well depth if you know it
  • People and bathrooms so we size it right
  • What you've noticed stains, smell, scale, pressure

No charge, no obligation. We don't price a well system until we've read the numbers.

Private wells in Co. Clare

The 2022 Census counted 5,191 Clare households on a private well or other private supply, 11.2% of homes. Group schemes matter even more here: 8,935 homes, 19.2%, are on a public or private group water scheme. The Killaloe area relies most on wells, with 38.9% of homes on a private supply, against 12.0% around Ennistimon. Around Kilrush only 5.8% are, but 46.4% of homes there are on group schemes.

Nobody monitors a household well for you. It's classed as an exempted supply, so testing it and treating it is down to the owner, and the EPA advises a test at least once a year, ideally after wet weather. That's why every system we fit in Clare starts with a lab report.

What's usually in a Clare well

Bacteria, the biggest issue

The Geological Survey of Ireland (GSI) calls faecal bacteria the most important groundwater quality issue in Clare. It found it in raw water at 10 of 15 public groundwater supplies, and says that in certain areas more than half of private wells are likely to be polluted at least some of the time. Large areas have bare rock or thin soil, and north and mid Clare are karst, where flow is rapid and the limestone does little to clean the water. Poor septic tanks, farmyards, landspreading and badly sited wells do the rest. See our guide to bacteria in well water.

Iron and manganese

In 1998 and 1999, 21 of 53 private supplies in the grant scheme, 40%, had iron or manganese problems, or both, mostly natural. The GSI reports high iron in the muddy Ballysteen limestone and in the shale and sandstone areas, and in the west Clare shales iron and manganese can exceed the limits. Around Mountshannon it found high manganese at a quarter of the sites sampled, one at 13 times the limit, and high lead in 3 of 24 supplies, linked to a fault in the rock. More in our guide to manganese in well water.

Hard on the limestone, softer in the west

A limestone plain runs from the Ennis area north to the Burren and east to Scarriff, and groundwater there is hard: the GSI measured 132 to 387 mg/L on the limestone. Softer water is found in west Clare and upland east Clare, and sandstone and shale samples gave 163 to 219 mg/L. Some springs also run cloudy, and coastal west Clare has naturally higher chloride, the salty part of seawater. Nitrate is generally low, averaging 7 mg/L in the GSI's sampling.

What we usually fit in Clare

Most Clare wells need the core line below, in this order, with stages left out if the report doesn't call for them:

  1. Sediment filter to protect everything after it, and to catch the cloudiness some springs give.
  2. Iron and manganese filter, because both foul a softener if they reach it.
  3. Water softener for the hard limestone water of north, central and lowland east Clare.
  4. UV disinfection if the report shows E. coli or coliforms, fitted last on the main line so the water reaching the lamp is clear.
  5. Reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap for drinking water, and worth having if your report shows lead.

The well grant in Clare

Clare County Council's Rural Water Services, at the Buttermarket Building on Drumbiggle Road in Ennis, runs the domestic well grant (ruralwater@clarecoco.ie, 065 6866115). Check the council's current conditions before any work starts, then bring it your lab report and our itemised quote. We'll tell you exactly which tests to ask the lab for: iron, manganese, hardness, pH, nitrate, E. coli and coliforms at the very least, plus lead around Mountshannon.

What's your water doing?

Tap what you've noticed. The ones marked are common in Co. Clare. You only get the stages your report calls for, in this order.

Your well 1 Sediment filter sand, silt, rust 2 pH correction acidic water 3 Iron & manganese stains, smell, taste 4 Water softener limescale 5 UV disinfection bacteria Whole house 6 Kitchen tap RO drinking water

Tap a symptom above, or a stage on the line, to see what deals with it.

On mains water and only after better drinking water or less limescale? You don't need any of this. See drinking water filters or water softeners.

Test, send, fit

We don't guess on wells. A wrong guess usually costs more than the system.

Get the water tested

Fitz Scientific, an independent INAB-accredited lab in Drogheda, analyses a sample from your well. We don't test it ourselves, but you can order the right test through us. The Check Plus kit covers iron, manganese, hardness, pH, nitrate and bacteria.

Treatment on a private well can qualify for a grant

Questions from Co. Clare

Anything else, ring 01 554 6266 or email info@ecofilter.ie. You'll get a plumber, not a call centre.

Why are Clare wells so prone to bacteria?
Large parts of Clare have bare rock or thin soil, and north and mid Clare are karst, where water moves fast and the limestone does little to clean it. The Geological Survey calls faecal bacteria the most important groundwater issue in the county. UV disinfection deals with it once the water reaching the lamp is clear.
Is there lead in wells around Mountshannon?
The Geological Survey found high lead in 3 of 24 supplies around Mountshannon, linked to a fault in the rock, and high manganese at a quarter of the sites it sampled. If your well is in that area, ask the lab to include lead. A reverse osmosis system at the kitchen tap reduces it in your drinking water.
Which parts of Clare rely most on wells?
Census 2022 shows 38.9% of homes in the Killaloe area on a private supply, against 12.0% around Ennistimon. Around Kilrush only 5.8% are, but 46.4% of homes there are on a group scheme.
Do you come out to my part of Co. Clare?
Yes. Our own plumbers fit and service well water systems right across Co. Clare, including Ennis, Killaloe, Scarriff, Mountshannon, Sixmilebridge, Quin, Newmarket-on-Fergus, Ennistimon, Lisdoonvarna, Miltown Malbay, Kilrush, Kilkee. Send us your Eircode with the lab report and we'll confirm.
Do you test the water yourselves?
No. An independent, INAB-accredited lab does it, so the results are impartial. If you're applying for the well grant, the lab has to take the sample itself, not you. You can order the test through us: Fitz Scientific in Drogheda analyses it. The Check Plus kit covers iron, manganese, hardness, pH, nitrate and bacteria.
Why won't you quote a system up front?
Because we'd be guessing. Two wells on the same road in Co. Clare can have very different water, and a system built on a guess either doesn't work or costs more than it should.
Is there a grant for well water treatment in Co. Clare?
The Domestic Private Well Grant pays 100% of approved water treatment costs up to €1,000, and 85% of the cost of fixing a well (up to €3,000) or drilling a new one (up to €5,000). The house must be more than seven years old and your main home, the council must inspect and approve before any work starts, and softeners are not covered. In Co. Clare it is run by Clare County Council. Check the current terms with the council before you start, and we'll give you the itemised quote the application needs.
What looking-after does it need?
Salt for the softener, a new UV lamp once a year, a sediment cartridge now and then, and a service visit once a year. A repeat lab test every year is the proof the water is right.
