Well water treatment in Co. Roscommon

Roscommon wells sit mostly on karst limestone, so the water is hard to very hard, iron and manganese are common and bacteria get in easily. Every well should be tested before anything is fitted.

  • 2,267 homes in Co. Roscommon rely on a private well or other private supply, almost 1 in 11 homes (Census 2022)
  • Every system specified from an independent lab report, never guessed
  • Fitted and serviced across Co. Roscommon by our own plumbers, not a subcontractor

No report yet? Order a well water test and the fee comes off your install. Quotes back within one hour during office hours.

What to send us

  • Your lab report PDF, photo or scan
  • Your Eircode and well depth if you know it
  • People and bathrooms so we size it right

Private wells in Co. Roscommon

The 2022 Census counted 2,267 Roscommon households on a private well or other private supply, 8.7% of the county. Far more, 4,555 homes, are on a public or private group scheme, between 16.5% and 18.5% of households in every district. Private supplies are most common in the Athlone district on the Roscommon side of the Shannon (10.9%) and around Boyle (10.2%), and least common around Roscommon town (5.5%).

Most supplies in Roscommon draw on groundwater: by council figures from 1999, 12 of 15 public schemes and 47 of 56 group schemes drew on it. Nobody monitors a household well for you, though. It's an exempted supply, so testing and treating it is down to the owner, and every system we fit in Roscommon starts with a lab report.

What's usually in a Roscommon well

Hard to very hard water

About 60% of Roscommon sits on one clean, heavily karstified limestone, and the Geological Survey of Ireland (GSI) classes 67% of the county as a karst aquifer, where water flows through open channels in the rock. Across 28 public and group schemes on that limestone, the water ranged from hard (250 to 350 mg/L) to very hard (over 350 mg/L), often with limescale problems. In south Roscommon it's typically 380 to 450 mg/L.

Bacteria

The GSI sampled raw, untreated water at 51 supply sources and found faecal coliforms at 40 of them (78%), including all 28 springs. There's no county figure for household wells, but they draw on the same ground. Brosna and Castlestrange group schemes failed the E. coli standard in 2023 and 2024, and Castlestrange failed again in 2025. The karst crosses county lines too: tracer tests near Ballinlough traced water underground from Coolcam to Meeltraun in Mayo. See bacteria in well water.

Iron and manganese

These come mainly from the sandstone and shaly limestone. The council's rural water monitoring in 2000 found nearly half of sources over the EU iron limit and 166 of 1,098 samples over the manganese limit. You see it as orange or brown staining, black specks and tinged laundry.

Rotten-egg smell and corrosive water

The GSI also names hydrogen sulphide, the rotten-egg smell, in the shaly limestone, and corrosive water from sandstone, mudstone and volcanic rock under thin soil. Those rocks form the hills: Kilronan Mountain, the Curlew Mountains and Slieve Bawn.

What we usually fit in Roscommon

Most Roscommon wells are on hard limestone and need the line below, in this order, with stages left out if the report doesn't call for them:

  1. Sediment filter to protect everything after it.
  2. pH correction, only if the report shows corrosive water, which is possible on the hills.
  3. Iron and manganese filter, which also deals with the rotten-egg smell and stops iron fouling the softener.
  4. Water softener sized for hard to very hard water.
  5. UV disinfection if the report shows E. coli or coliforms, fitted last on the main line so the water reaching the lamp is clear.
  6. Reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap for drinking water, if you want it.

On mains water around Athlone and only bothered by limescale? Our Athlone water softener page covers Monksland and the Roscommon side of the town.

The well grant in Roscommon

Roscommon County Council's Water Services Section runs the grant for improving a private water supply to a house (waterservices@roscommoncoco.ie), and gives filtration or UV treatment as examples of what it covers. Check the council's conditions before any work starts, then bring it your lab report and our itemised quote. We'll tell you which tests to ask the lab for: iron, manganese, hardness, pH, nitrate, E. coli and coliforms at the very least.

On mains water and only after better drinking water or less limescale? You don't need any of this. See drinking water filters or water softeners.

Test, send, fit

We don't guess on wells. A wrong guess usually costs more than the system.

Get the water tested

Fitz Scientific, an independent INAB-accredited lab in Drogheda, analyses a sample from your well. We don't test it ourselves, but you can order the right test through us. The Check Plus kit covers iron, manganese, hardness, pH, nitrate and bacteria.

The well grant in Co. Roscommon

Treatment on a private well can qualify for a grant

The Domestic Private Well Grant pays 100% of approved water treatment costs up to €1,000, and 85% of the cost of fixing a well (up to €3,000) or drilling a new one (up to €5,000). The house must be more than seven years old and your main home, the council must inspect and approve before any work starts, and softeners are not covered. In Co. Roscommon you apply to Roscommon County Council. We give you an itemised quote for the application, which asks for three.

The council also needs a water test with the sample taken by a lab technician, not you. Your council can tell you which accredited labs sample in Co. Roscommon.

Questions from Co. Roscommon

Anything else, ring 01 554 6266 or email info@ecofilter.ie. You'll get a plumber, not a call centre.

Why is Roscommon well water so hard?
About 60% of the county sits on one clean, heavily karstified limestone. The Geological Survey found water from it ranged from hard to very hard, over 350 mg/L, with 380 to 450 mg/L typical in south Roscommon. A softener deals with it, once any iron and manganese have come out.
How common are bacteria in Roscommon groundwater?
In the Geological Survey sampling of raw, untreated water at 51 supply sources, faecal coliforms turned up at 40, including all 28 springs. There is no county figure for household wells, but they draw on the same karst. A lab test is the only way to know about yours.
Which parts of Roscommon rely most on wells?
Census 2022 shows the highest share in the Athlone district on the Roscommon side of the Shannon (10.9%) and around Boyle (10.2%), with 5.5% around Roscommon town. More homes in every district are on a group scheme, between 16.5% and 18.5%.
Do you come out to my part of Co. Roscommon?
Yes. Our own plumbers fit and service well water systems right across Co. Roscommon, including Roscommon, Athlone, Boyle, Castlerea, Ballaghaderreen, Strokestown, Elphin, Termonbarry, Athleague, Frenchpark, Ballinlough. Send us your Eircode with the lab report and we'll confirm.
Do you test the water yourselves?
No. An independent, INAB-accredited lab does it, so the results are impartial. If you're applying for the well grant, the lab has to take the sample itself, not you. You can order the test through us: Fitz Scientific in Drogheda analyses it. The Check Plus kit covers iron, manganese, hardness, pH, nitrate and bacteria.
Why won't you quote a system up front?
Because we'd be guessing. Two wells on the same road in Co. Roscommon can have very different water, and a system built on a guess either doesn't work or costs more than it should.
Is there a grant for well water treatment in Co. Roscommon?
The Domestic Private Well Grant pays 100% of approved water treatment costs up to €1,000, and 85% of the cost of fixing a well (up to €3,000) or drilling a new one (up to €5,000). The house must be more than seven years old and your main home, the council must inspect and approve before any work starts, and softeners are not covered. In Co. Roscommon it is run by Roscommon County Council. Check the current terms with the council before you start, and we'll give you the itemised quote the application needs.
What looking-after does it need?
Salt for the softener, a new UV lamp once a year, a sediment cartridge now and then, and a service visit once a year. A repeat lab test every year is the proof the water is right.
