Self-sample kits can't be used for a private well grant application. For the grant, see the technician-sampled test below.

Private well grant

The well grant test, with a technician at your door

Since July 2020, county councils need the water sample for a private well grant to be taken by a trained technician from an accredited lab. You can't take it yourself.

  • Order for your county and Fitz Scientific rings you to book a day, usually within 2 weeks
  • The technician samples your kitchen tap and brings it straight back to the lab
  • Bacteria alert within 3 days, certificate within 10 working days
  • Tested for your council's list, accepted for grant applications
  • We fit the treatment within 90 days and the test fee comes off the job

The application also needs an itemised quote for the treatment. Once the certificate is in, we'll give you one. How the well grant works

Who analyses your water

Every sample goes to Fitz Scientific, an independent laboratory in Drogheda, Co. Louth, accredited by INAB (the Irish National Accreditation Board) to ISO 17025, the international standard for testing labs.

We don't test water ourselves, and we think that's how it should be. The people who sell you treatment shouldn't be the ones telling you that you need it. You get an impartial result from an accredited lab, and if it does show a problem, our plumbers fix it.

Accredited results are marked on the certificate. Fitz Scientific's PFAS method isn't accredited yet, and the Bord Bia test is analysed by an accredited partner laboratory.

Your certificate, and who sees it

  • Fitz Scientific emails your Certificate of Analysis to you, with a sheet explaining the results
  • They send us a copy, so we can talk you through it and price any treatment
  • Rather we didn't get a copy? Say so in the order note at checkout

Water testing questions

Still not sure which test? Ring 01 554 6266 or email info@ecofilter.ie. You'll get a plumber who reads lab reports, not a call centre.

Which water test do I need?
On mains water, the Check suite covers it. On a private well or group scheme, take Check Plus, which adds nitrate, lead and copper. If you're applying for the well grant, you need the technician-sampled Well Grant Water Test. The test finder at the top of this page picks for you.
Can I use a home kit for the well grant?
No. Since July 2020 county councils only accept a sample taken by a trained technician from an accredited laboratory. Order the Well Grant Water Test for your county and Fitz Scientific sends a technician to take it from your kitchen tap.
How do I take the sample?
Every kit comes with gloves and step-by-step instructions, and most samples come from the cold kitchen tap. Take it on the day you send it back, and send it Monday to Wednesday by Express Post or drop it to the lab in Drogheda, because it has to reach the lab within 24 hours.
How long do results take?
Your kit is posted within 2 working days. For the drinking water suites, you hear within 3 days if bacteria are found, and the full Certificate of Analysis follows within 10 working days. The grant test can take up to 2 weeks to get a technician's slot, then the same timings apply.
Who analyses the water?
Fitz Scientific, an independent laboratory in Drogheda, accredited by INAB to ISO 17025. We sell their tests and help you read the results, but we never test water ourselves.
Do I get the test fee back if you fit treatment?
Yes. Order your test through us, and if we supply and fit treatment at the same address within 90 days of your test order, we take the full price of the test off the job. Quote your test order number when you book. Ordering a fitted softener online? Put your test order number in the order note and we'll refund the test fee once it's fitted. One credit per test order, against fitted work only (not supply-only orders, filters or servicing), and it can't be exchanged for cash.
Do you see my results?
Yes. Fitz Scientific emails the certificate to you and sends us a copy, so we can talk you through it and quote for treatment if you want it. If you'd rather we didn't get a copy, say so in the order note at checkout.
My water comes from Uisce Éireann. Isn't it already tested?
Public supplies are monitored, but the results describe the supply, not the pipes and tanks in your house. Lead pipes in older houses, a storage tank in the attic or a long run of old pipework can all change what comes out of your tap. A test at your own tap shows what you actually drink.
What happens if the results show a problem?
We'll already have a copy of the certificate. We'll tell you what needs treating and what doesn't, and give you a fixed price fitted by our own plumbers. We install nationwide, except Donegal, Kerry, Leitrim and Sligo. If there are bacteria in drinking water, boil it until it's sorted.
How much is delivery?
Delivery is free on orders over €80, which covers every test except the Langelier index on its own. The grant test has no delivery charge. Put the well's address in as the delivery address at checkout so the technician knows where to go.
Can I drop the sample to the lab myself?
Yes. Fitz Scientific is at Unit 35, Boyne Business Park, Drogheda, Co. Louth, A92 D52D. Drop it in on the day you take it.
